Application Process

All Art, Media + Design applicants are asked to submit:

  1. A completed Summer Institute application form.
  2.  Personal Statement  Submit a written statement expressing why you want to attend the program and what you hope to gain from the experience.  300 word maximum.
  3. A  non-refundable deposit of $250.  The deposit will be returned only if a student is denied admission.

All Creative Writing applicants are asked to submit:

  1. A completed Summer Institute application form.

  1. A completed Summer Institute application form.
  2.  Audition   You may submit an audition digitally via YouTube or Vimeo link - or - audition in person.
    Audition Requirements: Audition should include up to five minutes of a technical demonstration at the barre or center.  Audition should also include a two-minute solo piece.
    In-Person Auditions: Saturday, March 9 (1:15 PM) atSummer Institute Open House If you plan to audition in-person, please RSVP and indicate this on your application.  
  3. A  non-refundable deposit of $250.  The deposit will be returned only if a student is denied admission.

All Creative Jazz Institute applicants are asked to submit:

  1. A completed Summer Institute application form.
  2.  Audition  You may submit an audition digitally via YouTube or Vimeo link - or - audition in person.

    • Students are accepted into the program in one of the following performance areas: Bass (upright or electric), Clarinet, Drum Set, Flute, Guitar, Percussion (African, Latin, etc.), Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Vibraphone, or Voice.

    • Audition Requirements: A prepared 1-2 minute piece that demonstrates a range of technical and improvisational abilities + a sight reading exercise.  View instructions

    • In-Person Auditions: Saturday, March 9 (1:15 PM) at Summer Institute Open Houseor May 4 at UArts Audition Day (11:00 AM; email precollege@uarts.edu).  If you plan to audition in-person, please RSVP and indicate this on your application.  

  3. A  non-refundable deposit of $250*.  The deposit will be returned only if a student is denied admission.

Note: Unlike the other programs in the Summer Institute, the Creative Jazz Institute is open to 6th through 12th graders.  Only rising 11th - 12th-grade students may reside on campus.  6th - 10th-grade students may apply as commuters.  Only high school students will receive college credit.

*Thanks to the generosity of our funders, full scholarships are available.  The deposit requirement is waived for full scholarship applicants.    View scholarship requirements

Apply Online
You must complete the application in a single session, as you will not be able to save your progress. Review the form and make sure that you have all the necessary information and materials available before you begin.  You will be required to submit the program deposit by credit card.

Apply By Mail
You may submit your completed application materials + program deposit (credit card, check, or money order made payable to The University of the Arts) by mail if preferred. Please make sure that your application is complete before you mail it. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed until they are complete.

Dates & Deadlines

  • Open house: Saturday, March 9
  • Priority application deadline: Saturday, March 9
  • Scholarship application deadline: Friday, March 22
  • Scholarship notification: Friday, April 12
  • Balance and payment due: Friday, May 17 ($60 late fee after May 17)
  • Automatic withdrawal for students with unpaid balances: Friday, May 31
  • Move in date for residents: Sunday, July 7
  • Classes begin: Monday, July 8
