Short Travel Course: Ireland
TCLA-200 Travel Writing In Ireland
Dates: May 31-June 12, 2020
Credits: Critical Studies Elective | 3 Credits
Who can participate? Open to all UArts students
Over the course of this 12-day study course, students will maintain a travel writing blog through journeys across three major Irish cities. Each location is decidedly unique and offers students distinct glimpses of life in Ireland: small-town Cork on the southern point of the island, farm country Galway in the northwest, and cosmopolitan Dublin on the eastern coast.
Individual writing assignments and collaborative peer response exercises will guide students through different methods of non-fiction expression, readings will encourage honest and productive consideration of published travel writing pieces, and each traveler will be exposed to a part of the world that is at once rooted in ancient history and hurtling toward a progressive future.
Student Learning Outcomes
The goal of this travel writing course is to develop the tools needed to respectfully navigate and absorb a new place. We will:
- Develop different rhetorical and stylistic strategies for different subjects and audiences — students should focus on the practice of writing, but will also be asked to make decisions that facilitate active, deliberate communication between writer and audience.
- Build confidence in the collaborative non-fiction writing process — this course will place emphasis on peer communication through frequent workshops and online commentary, and will also emphasize self-reflection through journal entries.
- Familiarize students with travel writing technologies — students will be introduced to several different types of blogging platforms and will be given the option to choose a hosting site that best fits their personal brand and style.
