JOB TITLE: Academic Advisor

DEPARTMENT:  Advising Center

REPORTS TO: Director, Advising Center

Summary: The academic advisor provides general academic advising and academic support to undergraduate and graduate students of a comprehensive, urban arts university.  The advisors work closely with first-year students, students making a choice of major or minor, students on academic probation, and students approaching graduation. Advisors work in collaboration with the University’s academic departments and are assigned as a liaison to an academic school. While assigned to specific schools, advisors maintain core competencies in advising all students - this position is assigned to the School of Dance. This is a full-time, exempt, salaried ten-month position reporting to the director of the Advising Center.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall advising that integrates academic planning, career and/or graduate school goals, and personal values to support students in all aspects of their college experience.
  • Understands, explains, and communicates the university’s curriculum and academic policies to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Regularly consults with faculty advisors, directors, and deans about students' academic progress as needed.
  • Reviews and processes Care Reports for assigned advisees, performing intervention and developing success plans when necessary.
  • Approves student requests for minor declaration, grade replacement, credit overload, and course withdrawals.
  • Monitors and advises students on academic probation including assisting students in the development of an academic success plan and midterm review.
  • Provides academic and learning support through tutoring and academic coaching to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Assesses student needs and refers students to appropriate campus resources.
  • Maintains accurate records of advising sessions. Prepares student contact reports and maintains student files. Assists in the on-going assessment activities of the department.
  • Designs and presents academic advising workshops at orientation, advising & registration periods, and periodically throughout the year.
  • Participates in program planning, including orientation, admissions events, commencement, art exhibits, and cultural events. 
  • Liaises with assigned academic school, attends program department meetings as requested, trains and informs advising staff colleagues of curricular changes/updates as well as learning and student development opportunities within their areas.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the humanities, education, arts, or related discipline required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Advising, teaching and/or tutoring experience in a college setting required.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with academic programs, administrative departments, students, and their families.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively with members of a team.
  • Proficiency in online CMS and student advising and data systems.
