Dance (MFA)

Marina Magalhães is an award-winning choreographer and seasoned dancer from Brazil based in Los Angeles. Her unique movement approach is unapologetically Latinx and feminist, drawing from Afro-Latin and post-modern dance practices to create dance work that is politically subversive and deeply personal. She has toured throughout the US (REDCAT Theater, Ford Amphitheater, Zipper Concert Hall, Bowery Ballroom, CounterPulse, Dance Mission Theater, Blaktina Festival), Brazil (Center for Theater of the Oppressed, FUNCEB School of Dance), Cuba (Arts Education Exchange, Teatro Favorito), Botswana (Maitisong Festival) and South Africa (The Wits Theatre at Witwatersrand University), earning her an LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography and critical acclaim from South Africa-based Creative Feel Magazine, "riveting... a physical and emotional feat". This year her newest dance concert work, Cor Da Pele, was selected by National Endowment for the Arts as one of the top 40 choreographic works in the US. Magalhães is a graduate of UCLA’s World Arts & Cultures/Dance Department and currently teaches there, as well as at UC Riverside. She is constantly crossing borders and thus, builds bridges.
