Dance

Shannon Murphy is dance artist and educator in Philadelphia. She is both an independent maker and a co-director of idiosynCrazy productions alongside Jumatatu Poe. Shannon is currently an artist in residence at the Whole Shebang where she teaches professional level technique classes and is developing a new work. She was a Mascher resident, (2015-17)  FringeArts LAB Fellow (2013) and a New Edge Resident in Dance (2011).  Her work has been presented nationally and throughout Philadelphia including AUX Space, Bryn Mawr College, Drexel University, FringeArts Festival and Scratch Nights, Group Motion Dance Company’s Spiel Uhr, Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival, and Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA).  

As a freelance performer, Shannon has worked with many dance artists/companies, including: anonymous bodies||art collective/Kate Watson-Wallace, Dance Theater X, Group Motion Dance Co, Kosoko Performance Group, The Naked Stark, Nichole Canuso Dance Company, SCRAP Performance Group, and has performed works by Peggy Baker, Boris Charmatz, Wally Cardona, and Rennie Harris.

Shannon holds a BA in dance from Point Park University, is a level three Certified Franklin Method teacher. Shannon has studied with Eric Franklin for over 10 years and is now one of his first US/English speaking faculty members.  She specializes in Franklin Method for dancers and has been a guest teacher at many university dance programs, summer programs for high school age dancers, and even young dancers in training.  

She has proudly worked at The University of The Arts since 2013 where she teaches contemporary studio practices, Body Pathways, and Franklin Method, allowing her to research and implement Franklin Method's impact on contemporary training. She became the curricular head of Body Pathways in the Fall semester of 2016.
