Krista Smith is a lighting designer and an interdisciplinary artist with an enthusiasm for new work, adaptations, and storytelling interwoven with music. 

Biography

Originally from California, Krista Smith is a recipient of Theatre Bay Area’s 2011 Eric Landisman Fellowship. Her professional training includes a BA in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University and an MFA in Lighting Design from Yale School of Drama. Smith is a company member of Krymov Lab NYC and resident lighting designer for Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus. She is also a proud member of USA 829 and UAP 9608.

Experience

Smith is a lighting designer and an interdisciplinary artist with an enthusiasm for new work, adaptations, and storytelling interwoven with music. An experienced teaching artist, she has worked with young playwrights in the development of their artistic voices though the Dwight/Edgewood Project; guest lectured on lighting design and process at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, while working as an artist in residence; and assisted Jennifer Tipton in the teaching of her lighting design master class of Swan Lake, in partnership with Asian Arts Council and Ballet Philippines.

    • A Christmas Carol, People’s Light Theater, Malvern, Pennsylvania; 

    • Wig Wag, Fringe Arts, Philadelphia; and

    • Always the Hour, The Icebox, Philadelphia. 

  • Her designs have been seen in New York City in venues including La MaMa, Ars Nova, New York Theater Workshop, and The Public Theater. 

  • Regionally, her designs have been seen at 

    • Dorset Theatre, Vermont; 

    • Weston Theater, Vermont;

    • Hartford Stage, Connecticut; 

    • Triad Stage, Greensboro, North Carolina; 

    • California Shakespeare Theater, Orinda; and 

    • Yale Repertory Theatre, New Haven, Connecticut.
