UArts Co-Hosts Annual Papermaking Conference and Exhibition

September 3, 2019

The paper revolution in the U.S. began right here in Philadelphia. This fall, UArts is pleased to co-host the annual Friends of Dard Hunter Conference, titled Manifest(o): Paper Revolutions. The conference will explore paper’s endurance as a material, subject and object in contemporary art.

From Sept. 19 - 21, paper will manifest in exhibitions, demonstrations and panel discussions to explore the revolution from paper’s origins in its present form and the launch of paper into the future.

The associated exhibit presented at UArts’ Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, Legends and Legacy: Revolutions in Hand Papermaking, will present a rich selection of works that illustrate the notable and vital developments in the field of modern hand papermaking. The MFA program in Book Arts & Printmaking at the University of the Arts has long maintained national and international recognition in the disciplines of papermaking, printmaking and book arts. Legends and Legacy celebrates the achievements made by contemporary artists who are challenging and redefining themselves by experimenting in a medium previously unknown to many of them.

“I am extremely interested in presenting artists who challenge and defy the traditional notion of ‘works on or of paper,’” says guest curator Cynthia Nourse Thompson. “The fluid sensibility of the material alone offers unlimited realizations as the foundation for encompassing a variety of techniques, processes and aesthetics.” Thompson is the director of the MFA programs in Book Arts & Printmaking and Studio Art at University of the Arts.
