June 12, 2019

Art Education and Fine Arts alum Suzanne Horvitz BFA ’60, MA ’72 is currently exhibiting work with her partner, Robert Roesch (chair of Sculpture at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), in the 13th International Cairo Biennale, through Aug. 10, 2019. The pair were awarded the opportunity to participate through a combination of serving as cultural advisors to U.S. embassies in Argentina, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Egypt, Myanmar and Syria; showing work in international exhibitions; receiving Fulbright Specialist awards; and participating in other biennales.

“My partner Robert Roesch and I treasure the opportunity to meet and work with artists from other countries,” Horvitz says. “We are eagerly anticipating this program and reconnecting with artist friends at the 13th International Cairo Biennale.”

Horvitz’s work is inspired by her dreams, poetry and Greek mythology. According to her, the series in the Cairo Biennale “alludes to the dangers inherent in temptation. It talks about the cyclical nature of history, the ushering in of a new era, and the possibility of gaining knowledge and power even from violent events.” The work utilizes painting, digital printing, gilding and silkscreening, with the gilded surfaces serving as symbols of the other side of the looking glass – the dream world where extraordinary things exist.

In addition to her UArts degrees, Horvitz holds a doctorate in Fine Arts from Columbia University. She is the former executive director of Foundation for Today’s Art/Nexus Gallery, and her art is represented in the permanent collections of many leading museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Horvitz has received over 20 grants, including three Fulbright Specialist awards. She and Roesch have curated and exhibited in the U.S. pavilion of the 2009 Baku Biennial and the 2009 Artist Book Biennale in Alexandria, Egypt. They have collaborated on sculptural installations and two-person exhibitions in China, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, Myanmar, Syria and throughout the U.S.
