Three Museums Buy Work by Painting Grad at Famed New York Art Fair

March 12, 2019

University of the Arts 2013 Painting + Drawing alum Jonathan Lyndon Chase has become something of a sensation in the contemporary art scene.

Earlier this month, three of his paintings were purchased by U.S. museums at the renowned Armory Art Show in New York. That follows sold-out solo shows at the prestigious Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles and Company Gallery in New York last year.

The Armory fair’s 25th anniversary edition saw 200 dealers from 33 countries offering artwork, and according to artnet News, Chase’s paintings were purchased by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Miami Beach. The third museum wasn’t identified. Artnet estimated the average price of Chase’s works at $20,000.

Chase, who is based in Philadelphia, delves into issues of race, gender, and sexuality in his large-scale, mixed-media works. At his debut show at Kohn Gallery last summer, every available work was sold within a day of the opening.
