UArts Alum Among ‘LGBTQ Artists Driving Contemporary Art Forward’

June 19, 2019

Jonathan Lyndon Chase ’13 (Painting) leads Artsy’s 2019 list of “Young LGBTQ Artists Driving Contemporary Art Forward.”

“A long length of time and history talks about black heteronormative bodies in spaces and history,” he says in his Artsy Q&A. “It is an exciting time to be making work that reclaims, challenges and brings center focus to bodies and stories of queer black people in ways that are less about the constraints, lenses and expectations.”

Chase’s career has been on an upward trajectory over the past few years. Represented by the Kohn Gallery in L.A., he had back-to-back sold-out shows in 2018. Additionally, the Walker Art Center and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami bought his works at the Armory Show in New York City earlier this year.
