UArts at 140: The Maker's Moment
The fall of 2016 is an exciting time for the University of the Arts, as it marks the launch of the University's 140th Anniversary Celebration, "The Maker's Moment." This yearlong series of events will honor our impressive past and begin moving forward with President David Yager's ambitious vision for the institution's future. Kicking off in October, the celebration will run through Commencement in May 2017, and feature a series of exciting events and activities, including:
140th Anniversary Gala
A creative black tie fundraising gala featuring a performance by Philadelphia native and Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr.

Inauguration of President David Yager
The ceremony includes a presentation of honorary degrees to Marvel Comics' Stan Lee (via video presentation) and to award-winning movie producer Ron Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine, Nebraska), as well as student music, dance and theater performances. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Theater Lecturer Awarded $75K Grant
Congratulations to Ira Brind School of Theater Arts Lecturer Nell Bang-Jensen, who has been named a Theatre Communications Group (TCG) 2016 Round 4 Leadership U[niversity]—One-on-One program recipient. Bang-Jensen will receive a $75,000 grant and mentorship from Dan Rothenberg, co-artistic director of UArts MFA in Devised Performance program partner Pig Iron Theatre Company, a TCG member theater. The goal of this program is to strengthen the field by developing the individuals who are the core and the future of theater.
Design Students Construct Giant Swing in Front of Hamilton Hall
School of Design juniors in Master Lecturer Alex Gilliam’s Applied Design Lab class participated in PARK(ing) Day Philadelphia on September 16 by constructing a giant swing within a parking space in front of Hamilton Hall. The project was part of the annual city-wide event that "re-imagines the possibilities of 170 square feet of public space." Participating students included Daniel Bier ’18 (Industrial Design), Laura Billie ’18 (Industrial Design), Chris Franco ’18 (Graphic Design), Connor McAllister ’18 (Industrial Design) and Casey Gwardyak ’18 (Industrial Design).
Mednick Gallery Exhibit Featured in 'Time' Magazine
Uncle Charlie, an exhibit by New York-based photographer Marc Asnin that will run in the University’s Sol Mednick Gallery September 30 – October 28, was included on Time magazine’s list of “32 U.S. Photo Exhibitions You Can’t Miss.” Ranked No. 19, Uncle Charlie is an extraordinary visual and reading diary that details the life of Asnin’s uncle and his struggles with mental illness, isolation, poverty and familial relationships.
Brind School Musical Featured in 'Philadelphia Inquirer'
The Elementary Spacetime Show, a new non-traditional musical by Ira Brind School of Theater Arts faculty member César Alvarez, was featured in the September 17 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer. The show, which kicked off the Brind School’s 2016-2017 season, is part of the 2016 Fringe Festival and features students Andrew Reiff ’17 (Acting), Michael Burgos ’20 (Acting), Mariah Cary Richard ’17 (Musical Theater) and Savannah Souza ’18 (Musical Theater).

The School of Art hosts a lecture by visual artist Ann Hamilton in collaboration with the Fabric Workshop and Museum, where Hamilton’s habitus installation is currently running through January 8, 2017.

Knowing Dance More Series: Reggie Wilson
Presented by the School of Dance, "Knowing Dance More" is a series of lectures, conversations and informal showings led by important artists and scholars in the international field of dance. Choreographer and performer Reggie Wilson, executive and artistic director of First and Heel Performance Group, will present "The Ring Shout - An African Technology in Relationship to Post-Modern Dance," a source of inspiration, research, history and information.

Framing Justice Symposium: Nancy Heller
Liberal Arts Professor Nancy Heller is one of six presenters for the Framing Justice: Modernism and Social Advocacy in American Visual Arts and Dance, 1929-1945 symposium, an interdisciplinary platform for invited art and dance history scholars. In addition to formal talks, this symposium will include a keynote address by noted art historian Andrew Hemingway and live performances of rarely seen dance works from the 1930s and 40s.

Poprocks: Gerri Rachins '77
Solo exhibition by alumnus Gerri Rachins BFA '77 (Painting). The origin of the paintings in this exhibit began with a walk on a beach in Miami. Gerri's eyes were attracted to small bits of bright colors in the vast beige field of beach sand. This visual experience reminded her of looking at a roll of un-primed canvas stretched out on the floor, with small colored jewels dispersed throughout.

New York-based photographer Marc Asnin has been photographing his uncle Charlie for 30 years. By the early 1980s when Asnin was studying photography, the reality of his uncle’s life had trampled his boyhood fantasy.

The Black Islands - Spirit and War in Melanesia (1994-2012): Ben Bohane
Since 1994, Vanuatu-based photojournalist Ben Bohane has lived and reported on the Pacific islands. This exhibit traces a photographic journey through these beautiful but sometimes dangerous islands. He dwells on a variety of kastom, cult and cargo cult movements, documenting their rituals and the hidden role they have sometimes played in island society.
