Product Design (BFA)

Matt Rhoades is program director for Product Design at University of the Arts. Prior to UArts, Rhoades was master and professor of the Strategic Design and Innovation program (SDI) at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts (SIVA) // DeTao School of Design in Shanghai, China. He has over 20 years of adjunct faculty experience from various schools, from University of Oregon to Art Center College of Design.

Biography 

Matt has nearly 30 years of global design experience as an industrial designer and product strategist, during which he acquired a long list of awards and honors, including an IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) gold medal, 30-plus design and utility patents, and six  world records.

Experience

Rhoades has extensive and impressive design experience. 

  • Before joining University of the Arts and DeTao School of Design, Rhoades was global creative director at Nike and founder and chief creative of the product design agency MatteLab. 

  • He also worked in various roles at global design studios, including 

    • VP of Design at Lifestyledesign in Santa Barbara, California; 

    • design director at Fox Racing in Morgan Hill, California; and

    • digital design manager at Frog Design in San Francisco, California, and Trek Bicycle in Madison, Wisconsin

  • Rhoades’ previous projects include 

    • the Apple OS logo brand design, 

    • the design of the world’s first DVR system for TiVo, and 

    • the world’s first file sharing platform Napster (V2.0) website.

  • His design of the Trek Y-Bike was named “Third Most Influential Mountain Bike of all Time” with products shown at the Cooper Hewitt, New York, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

In addition to holding a BS in Product Design from the Art Center College of Design, Pasasenda, California, Rhoades also received an MBA in Entrepreneurial Management / New Product Development from Marylhurst University, Portland, Oregon. He is a rare balance of qualitative (design) thinking and a quantitative (business) approach.
