Director of Counseling

Abe currently serves as Director of Counseling at the University of the Arts. He is responsible for overseeing all mental health counseling on campus, including individual therapy, support groups, outreach, workshops, referrals, medication management, and assisting with crisis interventions. Abe supervises a staff of full-time therapists, manages a clinical training program for advanced counseling, clinical social work and creative arts therapies graduate interns, and provides consultation to faculty and staff on concerns pertaining to student mental health.  

Abe joined University of the Arts in September 2015 after working at three other university counseling centers in the Philadelphia area. Abe previously directed Counseling Services at Penn State Brandywine in Media, PA, as well as working as a staff therapist at Temple University’s Tuttleman Counseling Services and the University of Pennsylvania’s Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS). Abe is a board-certified licensed clinical social worker with nearly a decade of experience in a variety of mental health settings. His greatest interest, however, is helping artistic students in college cope with life transitions and individuation. Abe’s specialties include addressing low self-esteem and shyness, young adult identity development, existential issues in mental health, and the role of creativity in wellness. His approach to clinical work involves a mixture of existential / humanistic psychology, relational cognitive behavioral therapy, and strengths-based coaching. Abe is also completing a respecialization to pursue a credential as a provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P). 

Abe loves working with art students as a teacher and mentor as well as a therapist and counseling center director. He has taught as adjunct faculty at Moore College of Art, Penn State Abington, Holy Family University, and UArts. Abe's interest in art started early when he attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts as a fine arts major in New York City in 1997. He went on to obtain his BA, summa cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa, from Brooklyn College (CUNY) in Art History and Philosophy (2002). He holds an MA in Art History (Modern and Contemporary Art) from Cornell University (2004, ABD), an MEd in Arts Education from Harvard University (2005), and an MS in Clinical Social Work from Columbia University (2010). Abe lives in Center City his flame-point Siamese cat Casper. He likes meeting new people and wants to know everyone at UArts. If you see him, say hello!
