Sarah Sanford has been a professor in the Devised Performance MFA program since 2014. She teaches a wide range of physical and ensemble theater approaches, including Movement Analysis, Mask, Improvisation, and heads the Pedagogy sequence.  Before teaching at UArts, Sanford was a Pig Iron Theatre company member and a freelance actor and director.

Biography
After training as a dancer in her childhood and teen years, Sanford grew interested in theater, and more specifically, physical theater. She attended the Jacques Lecoq International School of Theatre in Paris for two years before returning to the U.S. to join Pig Iron on its production of Shut Eye, a collaboration with esteemed ensemble director Joseph Chaikin. Since 2014, Sanford has been an instructor with the Devised Performance MFA program, which has produced some of Philadelphia’s most vibrant and innovative young performer-creators.

  • Her directing credits include the Philadelphia premiere of Jenn Kidwell and Scott Sheppard’s Underground Railroad Game.  
  • Sanford has taught at Swarthmore College and Villanova University, both in Pennsylvania.

Awards & Accolades
Sanford won the 2010 F. Otto Haas Award for Best Emerging Artist.
