In 2019, Sam Heaps earned an MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where they were a New Artist's Society Scholarship recipient.

Biography 
Sam Heaps’ work explores violence, trauma and systems of classification. It is influenced by years spent traveling and working places such as Hanoi, Istanbul, Phnom Penh and the American West. It defies easy categorization.
