“I teach first-year writing because I believe that communication is the foundation of connection, and it is my hope that through writing, students will build connections with each other and the world around them.”

Kristen Burkett is an instructor for the First-Year Writing program and serves as senior director of student engagement.

Biography
Kristen Burkett’s love for the written word began early on in high school, when she was exposed to literature that broadened her worldview, encouraged her to practice analysis and exposed her to many new ideas. Because of her love of literature, she chose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and a master’s degree in English from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Burkett specifically studied British literature, focusing on the Early Modern period and writing her thesis on John Milton’s Paradise Lost. With Lee University faculty, she spent time researching teaching pedagogies and worked with faculty to build the Writing Studio program there. Burkett’s experience in that program developed her passion for helping first-year students develop their writing, analysis and rhetorical skills.
