Biography

Currently, Emily Wexler is on the faculty of University of the Arts; the School of Visual Arts, New York City; the Putney School in Vermont; and Long Island University Brooklyn. She has taught and made work with students at 

  • American Dance Festival, Durham, North Carolina;
  • American College Dance Festival; 
  • Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania;
  • Hollins University, Roanoke, Virginia; 
  • North Carolina State University in Raleigh;
  • University City Arts League in Philadelphia; and
  • University of Memphis. 

Since 2003, Wexler has taught senior citizens throughout Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Most consistently, she has worked with the Senior League of Flatbush, the Senior League of Midwood and the Park Slope Senior Center, all in New York. From 2012 to 2015, the Brooklyn Arts Council awarded Wexler with a SPARC (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) grant, to make dances at the JASA Scheurer Senior Center, Brooklyn, and for seniors from the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island Inc. and the Grace Agard Harewood Senior Center in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Wexler's work has been seen at numerous spaces and institutions, including

  • American Dance Festival, Durham, North Carolina; 
  • American Realness Festival, New York City; 
  • Center for Performance Research, Brooklyn; 
  • Draftworks at Danspace Project, Manhattan; 
  • Knitting Factory, Brooklyn; 
  • MoMA PS 1, Long Island City, New York; 
  • Wuk, Vienna;
  • You Have to Burn to Shine, Paris; and 
  • most distinctly, in the living room of communist and activist Paul Robeson. 

As a performer, Wexler has worked with Rebecca Brooks, Kim Brandt, Beth Gill, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Karinne Keithley, Jen McGinn, Ryan McNamara and Yvonne Meier.

Awards & Accolades

Wexler has been honored with 

  • the Academy of American Poets Gertrude Claytor Poetry Prize for a collection of her poems, 
  • the ACDA (American College Dance Association)/Dance Magazine Award for Outstanding Choreography, 
  • an Artist Relief grant,
  • a Bessie Award nomination for performance and 
  • a Foundation for Contemporary Art Emergency Grant.
