'Underground Pool' Seeks Cover Art Submissions
Underground Pool, the University’s student literary magazine, is seeking cover art submissions for this year's issue. Undergraduate students from any program may participate. Details: Each year's magazine cover reflects that issue's theme; this year's theme is RESISTANCE. Dimensions: 11” x 8.5”, landscape, front and back wraparound. The design must incorporate this text: “Underground Pool,” “Issue Six” (or 6, #6, etc.) and “Spring 2016.” Submissions should be sent to undergroundpool@uarts.edu. The deadline for cover submissions is Tuesday, February 23.

Student RUSH Tickets to 'Exit Strategy'
$10 student RUSH tickets are available to the Philadelphia Theatre Company’s production of “Exit Strategy,” starring alumni Aimé Donna Kelly BFA '09 (Acting)and Brandon J. Pierce BFA '12 (Acting). Tickets are available three hours prior to curtain for any “Exit Strategy” performance through February 28. Students: Call for Submissions for 6th Annual OTIS Imaging Lab Exhibition
The OTIS Imaging Lab Exhibition is a juried exhibition of student work open to all currently enrolled undergraduate students at UArts. Selected work will be printed by the Imaging Labs, framed by our friends at Trinity Framing and displayed in Anderson Hall. A jury of four faculty members will review the show and select one student to receive the Print Services Award of $500 during the University’s annual Award Ceremony at the end of the year. Submission forms can be picked up at the Imaging Labs, Terra 1316 or Anderson 616, and are due February 26. For more information, contact James Matusheski at matusheskij@uarts.edu.

Dance Alums Perform with Beyoncé at Super Bowl 50
Congratulations to Abrielle Sanders BFA '14 (Dance) and Brittanie Alexander BFA ’12 (Dance), who performed with Beyoncé during the Super Bowl 50 half-time show. This is the second time that Sanders has performed with the Grammy-winning artist; she also recently performed with Jason Derulo on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

'Z' Big Band Is Next Generation Jazz Festival Finalist
Congratulations to the UArts “Z” Big Band on being named a finalist in the College Big Band Division of the 46th Next Generation Jazz Festival, being held April 8-10 in Monterey, Calif. Led by Assistant Professor Matt Gallagher MM '01 (Jazz Studies), the School of Music ensemble will compete against top student musicians from across the country and around the world for a chance to perform at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival, taking place September 16-18.

Museum Studies will host a two-day symposium March 24-25 devoted to exploring key developments within the museum field of the past quarter century as the department celebrates the 25th year of the MFA program in Museum Exhibition Planning + Design. Alumna Is 2016 Craft Council Fellow
Congratulations to alumna Myra Mimlitsch-Gray BFA ’84 (Crafts), who has received a 2016 American Craft Council Award, presented biennially to honor those who have demonstrated outstanding artistic achievement, leadership and service in the field of craft. The award includes induction into the Council’s prestigious College of Fellows. Mimlitsch-Gray will be honored at the ACC Awards gala in October.

Faculty Member Featured in Online Animation Mag, Podcast
Animation Master Lecturer Elliot Cowan was recently interviewed by popular U.K. online animation magazine Skwigly.com about his film "The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead." Cowan was also featured on the Skwigly Podcast.

Student Band Featured in 'Live Music Daily'
Festive fusion band Out of the Beardspace, which features School of Music students Sam Gutman ’18 (Keyboards) and Jeremy Savo ’18 (Guitar), is gaining recognition in the music world with a recent spotlight in online publication Live Music Daily, whichincludes them as part of "a new invasion of outstanding bands [from Philadelphia] ready to take their music to the next level and make an impact in music throughout the country." The band is also gearing up for its annual Beardfest, a three-day music, art, education and community festival taking place June 16-18 at Paradise Lakes Campground in Hammonton, N.J. Read the article >>

Book Arts Faculty Member to Teach Workshop in Ireland
Interdisciplinary Fine Arts faculty member Alice Austin will teach a weeklong book arts workshop September 2-10 at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Ireland. In “Building Books & Imagery with Alice Austin,” the class will create a variety of book structures, emphasizing the sculptural possibilities of the book. All skill levels welcome; no bookbinding experience necessary.

Center for Teaching and Learning: Writing in the Studio
The Center for Teaching and Learning presents “Writing in the Studio: Analyzing Works of Art to Find and Effectively Communicate Meaning.” Analyzing and writing about art helps students gain a deeper understanding of works of art, promotes a thoughtful, investigative response to curiosity, and helps students articulate their thoughts in a more constructive manner during class critiques. Black Tar Bodega: Adam Lovitz + Patrick McGuire
Part of the Hamilton Hall Public Art Initiative, “Black Tar Bodega” is an installation by artists Adam Lovitz and Patrick MaGuire, who met in 2012 while attending the graduate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The exhibit displays materials that are stripped from branding, encased in ice, harvested by the sun and offered to the passerby for earthly reflection.

“Gitmo at Home, Gitmo at Play, Gitmo on Sale” by photographer Debi Cornwall looks at the grim absurdity of daily life for both prisoners and guards at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba (known as “Gitmo”) through their residential and leisure spaces, as no faces may be depicted per military regulation.

Beyond the Forest: Loli Kantor
“Beyond the Forest” is a photographic series that represents the fragile renewal of Jewish life in Eastern Europe in the early 21st century. The project began when Loli Kantor, an Israeli-American photographer, turned a journey to discover the world of her family, most having perished in the Holocaust, into a broader engagement with the daily life of the Jews of Eastern Europe today.

Obscure: Halah Alfadl ’15 & Kathleen Greco ’79, ’15 
“Obscure” combines the works of Halah Alfadl MFA ’15 MFA (Studio Art) and Kathleen Greco BS ’79 (Industrial Design), MFA ’15 (Studio Art). Their photography, which examines the identity and perception of women, is not about memories but rather, through the camera, Alfadl and Greco question the body to expose obscure private cultural and social boundaries.
