ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pulitzer, Tony and Emmy Award-Winning Composer Tom Kitt Headlines UArts' 138th Commencement Ceremony
Composer, musical director, conductor, arranger and musician Tom Kitt, whose awards include a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for the rock musical “Next to Normal,” will deliver the keynote address at UArts’ 138th Commencement ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, May 10 at the University’s Merriam Theater on the Avenue of the Arts. He will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts (HDFA) degree. Longtime UArts Board of Trustees member and former board chairman Ronald J. Naples will also receive an HDFA. Sharing the spotlight will be Silver Star Alumni Award recipients Fredric Snitzer BFA ’73 (Sculpture), a Miami-based art gallery owner and Art Basel selection committee member, and UArts Associate Professor Kim Yvonne Bears-Bailey BFA ’84 (Ballet), assistant artistic director of innovative dance company PHILADANCO. 

Summer Building Hours
In an effort to accommodate summer activities and operate efficiently, building hours have been modified beginning on Wednesday, May 11 through Wednesday, August 24. All buildings will be locked at the closing hour. If there are scheduled events beyond the closing time, we will keep the buildings open to accommodate those events, at the cost of the requesting department. 'Z' Big Band Named Top College Jazz Ensemble by 'DownBeat' Magazine
For the second consecutive year, the University of the Arts’ “Z” Big Band has been recognized as one of the best in the nation. Led by Assistant Professor Matt Gallagher MM '01 (Jazz Studies), the School of Music band was named the top college large jazz ensemble in the 2016 DownBeat magazine Student Music Awards, considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. 

Alumna to Produce New Angelica Huston/Bill Pullman Film
Jaclyn Bashoff BFA ’00 (Writing for Film + Television) will be producing “Trouble,” an indie comedy-drama from Theresa Rebeck, the creator of NBC's “Smash.” Angelica Huston and Bill Pullman will play a feuding brother and sister whose differences entangle the fate of an old friend, played by David Morse. Read a Hollywood Reporter article >>

Crafts Professor Named Hauberg Fellow at Pilchuck Glass School
Associate Professor and Glass Coordinator Alexander Rosenberg has been named a John H. Hauberg Fellow at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Wash. Named for the late Pilchuck co-founder, the fellowship was established to encourage collaboration among a group of outstanding artists. Rosenberg will also present a video and lecture titled “Glass As Performative Practice” at Bearnstow Performance School in Maine on July 1.

Video by Professor Emeritus Accepted into Fonlad Festival
"Shadow Whispers," a video by Professor Emeritus Tom Porett, was accepted into the 2016 Fonlad Video & Performance Festival in Coimbra, Portugal. The online festival of digital arts is a collaborative art project that aims to promote and encourage artistic creation in terms of new media, with particular emphasis on video art through presentations, exhibitions, online exhibitions, installations, workshops, residencies and performances.

Alum's Work Featured in 'Colossal' Art Blog
Art blog Colossal features new work by alumnus Jason Chen BFA ’08 (Animation), co-founder of Philly’s Paradigm Gallery + Studio and film/animation studio Juggling Wolf. Chen’s work is currently included in the Paradigm group exhibition “Portrait,” on display through June 18. Read the blog post >>

Professor Emerita Gives Talk at Queens College
Professor Emerita Carol Moore, founding director of the MFA in Studio Art program and former associate dean of the College of Art, Media & Design, gave a talk at the annual Migrating Objects: Material Culture and Italian Identities conference held April 29-30 at Queens College/CUNY in New York City. The interdisciplinary conference focuses on material culture in the contexts of Italy, its colonies and its diasporic communities.

The exhibit features work by artists Jeff Brown, Bill Cromar and Leo Hylan that explores how digital artwork can be made through a procedural approach: gather data, run an algorithm, output the art.

Exhibition by renowned artist Leslie Dill, curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson, director of the MFA programs in Book Arts + Printmaking and Studio Art. “Myth & Menagerie” serves as the premiere of a newly produced body of work by Dill who works in sculpture, photography, printmaking and performance, using a variety of media and techniques to explore themes of language, the body and transformational experiences.
