Medical Care & Medication

<< Back to Counseling Center

Psychiatric services are available on campus on a limited basis for UArts students who may benefit from both medication and counseling. These services are limited to students who do not have adequate resources to receive such services off campus in the community. Students must be referred to a our on-campus consulting psychiatrist by a staff member of the UArts Counseling after appropriate screening and intake assessment.

What to Expect From Your First Visit
If a UArts Counseling staff member has referred you to see our consulting psychiatrist on-campus, then you will be scheduled for an initial one hour appointment. Prior to that appointment you will be asked to complete a medical/psychiatric history form and a depression questionnaire. The appointment will consist of a diagnostic interview after which the provider will discuss with you diagnostic impressions and recommendations.

Medication
If medication is initiated as part of your treatment plan as agreed upon by you and your doctor, you will be scheduled for regular follow-up visits to determine how you responding to treatment. These visits average 15 minutes and occur approximately every 2-3 weeks until your symptoms have improved and you are stabilized on medication. Meanwhile, you should be pursuing counseling in conjunction with medication given that the two work best in combination.

Attendance
Please be advised that missing an appointment with the doctor on campus without 24 hour advance notice will result in a penalty charge.
