Fake ice cream?! Professional food stylist Susan Ottaviano joined Continuing Education Social Media Marketing and Digital Photography certificate students in the UArts Makerspace and demonstrated how to make and style perfect fake ice cream.

In this 3-hour food styling workshop, students learned the basic techniques of food styling from Susan Ottaviano, who has over 20 years experience styling food for clients like Bon Appétit, Men’s Health, Oprah Magazine, Grey Goose, Pepsi, and Lays. Using Susan’s own published tear sheets as a guide, she discussed composition, color, deconstructing a recipe, and problem solving for the camera. Students got the chance to create and photograph their own creations using materials provided for the workshop. Career opportunities in food styling and photography as well as tips for working with art directors and editors were discussed. Ottaviano demoed client-freelancer situations that Social Media Marketing and Photography students will encounter in the field – with or without fake ice cream.
