Meet Social Media Marketing Certificate alum and faculty: Amy Saxton

January 29, 2020

We recently caught up with Amy Saxton, a Social Media Marketing alum and new faculty member. She gave us some insight into the certificate program, her new role as freelancer and advice for people just starting out in the field.

What is your professional background - have you always had an interest in Social Media Marketing?
After six years leading local marketing efforts at Whole Foods Market, I became the first social, digital, and advertising manager for Whole Foods Market’s Mid-Atlantic Region, overseeing the social and digital strategy for 50+ stores across six states. Since leaving Whole Foods Market in 2018,  I've worked with NYC-based pajama company RECLINER and cheesecake brand Little Cloud Bake Shop, and Philadelphia-based Little Baby’s Ice Cream and honeygrow. I've always been interested in Social Media Marketing and it's been fun and rewarding to work with so many amazing brands in and around Philadelphia.

How has the Social Media Marketing Certificate program affected your work?
The certificate program classes helped me take a step back from the everyday grind and really focus on big picture social strategy. My professors all had such diverse experience, so I learned something different and valuable from each class. Being a graduate of the certificate program gave me the confidence to feel like a social media expert.

Did this certificate program bring on any new opportunities? If so, how did the certificate prepare you for these opportunities? Yes! It helped land me the job at Whole Foods Market and it prepared me for being the go-to expert for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

As an alum and a faculty member, what advice do you have for someone who is looking to transition to a career in Social Media Marketing?
Social media changes all the time so it's important to keep up with trends and try new platforms to really prepare yourself for a role in social. Grab coffee with your friends who are social media experts and learn from their experience. Sign up for the certificate program at UArts. Network and put yourself out there!
