Alex Bechtel is one of Philadelphia’s leading actors, composers, sound designers, writers, and directors, as well as a teaching artist and multi-instrumentalist, whose work has appeared on the stages of most Philadelphia theater companies.

He’s a 2008 UArts Brind School alumnus, and earned his MFA from the UArts Pig Iron School in 2013. Alex has received Barrymore Awards—Philly’s top theater honors—for Outstanding Music Direction and Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical for his performance in Theatre Horizon’s Into the Woods. He was also a 2015 Finalist for the F. Otto Haas Award for Outstanding Philadelphia Emerging Theatre Artist.

In 2015, he was awarded the Independence Fellowship in the Arts to engage in a one-on-one creative intensive with Kentucky-based New Music composer Rachel Grimes on new approaches to the use of music in theater.
