Mary Ellen Desmond
Mary Ellen Desmond has been performing professionally as a vocalist in the Philadelphia area for twenty plus years and has also accepted invitations to perform in Japan. In July of 2012, JazzTimes magazine described her as " a confident, musical, swinging stylist who is simply a joy to hear; her voice is sweet, clear and pure, with a deceptively wide range, attractive vibrato, and superior intonation”.
Classically trained alumnus of Philadelphia's University of the Arts, she is recognized as a crossover artist covering a variety of styles and repertoires with a primary focus on jazz standards. The repertoire she’s chosen is ideal for her and includes American Songbook classics featuring composers and lyricists from Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, and Hoagy Carmichael, to Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron and Abbey Lincoln. Ms. Desmond performs at local clubs, outdoor festivals, private events, and churches with a roster of Philadelphia's finest instrumentalists including Tom Lawton, Lee Smith, Larry McKenna, Dan Monaghan, and the All-Star Jazz Trio of Andy Kahn, Bruce Kaminsky and Bruce Klauber. She is currently holding a weekly engagement with her trio at New York City's landmark restaurant Tavern On The Green.
In addition to performing, she has been teaching voice at University of the Arts' School of Music since 2007 and Community College of Philadelphia since 2010. Ms. Desmond returns to teach a vocal class for the UArts Continuing Education Department in the Fall of 2016. Active as a program and music coordinator for fund raising concerts to benefit lives affected by AIDS / HIV she will present her 13th annual Comfort & Joy Holiday Jazz Concert in December 2016.
