Illustration Alum Wins Silver Medal from Society of Illustrators

December 6, 2019

Just a year and a half after graduating, the Society of Illustrators has awarded a silver medal to Shannon Ryan BFA '18 (Illustration) for her work “The Schoolyard.” Founded in 1901, the Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization in the U.S. dedicated to the art of illustration.

The society presents an annual showcase for illustrators and features the most exceptional works created during the year. Thousands of entries are reviewed by a jury that includes acclaimed designers, illustrators and art directors. The competition is open to artists worldwide, and gold and silver medals are presented to the illustrators and art directors whose works are judged the best in each category.

The first of this two-part exhibit features work in the categories of Advertising, Institutional, Surface/Product Design and Uncommissioned; pieces of self-generated work such as portfolio samples. Ryan is one of just three silver medalists—one of the society’s top prizes—for her uncommissioned work.

The winning pieces will be showcased in the Illustrators 62: Part One Exhibit: Uncommissioned, Advertising, Institutional, Surface/Product Design from Jan. 8 to Feb. 1 at the Society of Illustrators in New York City. An opening reception and awards ceremony will take place Jan. 10, 2020.

Ryan previously won the society’s Zankel Scholarship in 2017, a memorial scholarship awarded each year to one top junior illustration major in the country.
