BFA in Creative Writing Forges New Internships

In a bid to provide its students with enriching and challenging internship opportunities, the BFA in Creative Writing program embarked on a dynamic journey this past summer. The program has actively fostered relationships and created opportunities that resulted in three exciting internships with Blue Stoop, Saturnalia Press, and The Grind that promise to be transformative for budding writers.

Blue Stoop Partnership: Fostering the Literary Hub of Philadelphia

One of the most notable collaborations is the partnership with Blue Stoop, Philadelphia’s premier independent haven for writers. Blue Stoop is renowned for its vibrant literary ecosystem that offers readings, classes, and informal gatherings, making it a central hub for the city’s literary enthusiasts. Importantly, the values upheld by Blue Stoop align closely with those of UArts: inclusivity and accessibility.

This collaboration has been years in the making, with past directors Emma Eisenberg and Joseph Thomas having previously taught classes in the Creative Writing program. This past summer, Joseph Thomas and Creative Writing Program Director Steven Kleinman dedicated their efforts to crafting a mutually beneficial relationship, which led to the concept of an intern who will assist Blue Stoop in programming, delve into the intricacies of arts administration, and manage the connection between Blue Stoop and the Creative Writing program. The initiative is set to launch later this fall.

Saturnalia Press: Nurturing Unconventional Narratives

Saturnalia Press, founded in 2002 by poet and Drexel University faculty member Henry Israeli, has been a pioneering force in redefining poetry and art narratives. Its mission to provide an “edgy alternative to traditional narratives” has attracted notable poets, such as Natalie Shapero, Sebastian Agudelo, Hardara Bar-Nadav, Courtney Lamar-Charlston, and Tim Liu, among others.

UArts has maintained a longstanding relationship with Saturnalia; faculty members actively contribute to its literary catalog. Though informal internships have occurred over the past two years, the program has now formalized this partnership and offers at least one student per year the opportunity to work alongside Saturnalia Press’ distinguished team of editors.

The Grind: Fostering an Online Writing Community

Another compelling internship is a collaboration with The Grind, a thriving online writing community. Founded by Ross White and currently overseen by local Philadelphia poet Erme Muala, The Grind has evolved into one of the country’s largest online writing communities. Originating as a means to foster accountability for artists working in isolation, it has grown exponentially and now attracts hundreds of poets, storytellers, and multimedia artists each month.

This internship will not only allow students to become integral members of The Grind’s flourishing community, but also empower them to build a lasting literary home for themselves beyond their university years. Additionally, interns will support Erme Muala in her endeavors, including assisting a group of medical professionals who use writing to cope with the challenges of their jobs. This multifaceted opportunity promises to be a stepping stone for students as they navigate their post-graduation writing careers and explore further arts administration prospects.
