UArts Celebrates 140 Years of Making
The fall of 2016 is an exciting time for the University of the Arts, as it marks the launch of the University's 140th Anniversary Celebration, "The Maker's Moment." This yearlong series of events will honor our impressive past and begin moving forward with President David Yager's ambitious vision for the institution's future. Kicking off in October, the celebration will run through Commencement in May 2017, and feature a series of exciting events and activities, including:

140th Anniversary Gala
A star-powered, Grammy-style gala featuring Philadelphia native and Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr., and performances by some of UArts’ most renowned ensembles.

Inauguration of President David Yager
We will ceremoniously welcome President Yager to the University of the Arts community. A ceremony highlight will be the presentation of an honorary degree to the creative genius behind Marvel Comics, the iconic Stan Lee. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Core Studies Students Create 'Self Portrait Wall'
Self portraits created by students in the Core Studies program’s Image/Time classes are on display on the third floor of Anderson Hall in celebration of the University’s 140th Anniversary and the Inauguration of President David Yager, as well as to welcome the incoming class of 2020. The chosen portraits were printed on removable label paper and adhered to the wall following a creative grid pattern. The patterned installation interacts with and responds to the existing architectural structure and celebrates the energy and enthusiasm of students enrolled in the University of the Arts’ College of Art, Media & Design. Project collaborators included Sculpture Assistant Professor Laura Frazure and Fine Arts Associate Professor Diane Pepe.

Photography Program Director Is 'Critical Mass' Finalist
Assistant Professor Anne Massoni, director of the University’s Photography program, has been named a finalist in Photolucinda’s 2016 Critical Mass, an annual program that provides participants with career-building opportunities and promotes the best emerging and mid-career artists working today. Massoni’s submission included photos from her Holding Rory series, which will be featured in the next issue of Edge magazine.

Crafts Professor’s Article Featured in 'Glass Quarterly'
An article by Assistant Professor and Glass Coordinator Alexander Rosenberg was published in the Fall 2016 issue of Glass Quarterly magazine. “Analog Responses to Digital Overload” spotlights an Art Alliance exhibition that features work by four Philadelphia glass artists and educators responding to the din of the digital era. Rosenberg is also featured in a group exhibit at Columbia University titled Touch & GORead the article >>

Laurie Wagman Series: Ben Wendel Master Class
This weekend master class with Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel (Kneebody) is part of the Laurie Wagman Concert Series, a collaboration between UArts Trustee Laurie Wagman and students in the Music Business, Entrepreneurship + Technology program that began in October 2015. Free with student ID. Raffle for two free tickets for his evening show at Chris' Jazz Café.

Touch & GO: Alexander Rosenberg
Work by Assistant Professor and Glass Coordinator Alexander Rosenberg is featured in this group exhibition of sculpture and video curated by artist Bryan McGovern Wilson, winner of the University’s 2014 Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts.

The University of the Arts' Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by the Creative Writing program and features acclaimed contemporary writers who visit campus each year. This reading features Annie Liontas, whose debut novel, Let Me Explain You (Scribner), was featured in The New York Times Book Review as Editor's Choice and selected by the American Book Association as a 2015 Indies Introduce Debut and Indies Next title.

Knowing Dance More Lecture Series: Boris Charmatz
Presented by the School of Dance, "Knowing Dance More" is a series of lectures, conversations and informal showings led by important artists and scholars in the international field of dance. Community consultant and former Dance/UP executive director Lois Welk will engage choreographer Boris Charmatz in a public conversation focusing on artistic practice, public participation and the evolution of a new vision for dance as a time-based visual art.

Accomplished Visions: The Arabs: Samer Mohdad
Based in Lebanon, photographer Samer Mohdad’s work explores the concept of Arab identity. He traveled widely for many years in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, portraying the difficult everyday life of the people of these countries moving between war and faith, in unadorned and personal inside views and news.

Uncle Charlie: Marc Asnin
New York-based photographer Marc Asnin has been photographing his uncle Charlie for 30 years. By the early 1980s when Asnin was studying photography, the reality of his uncle’s life had trampled his boyhood fantasy.

The Art of Sarah Jacoby
Sarah Jacoby is an illustrator and artist, a writer and all around creative thinker and maker. She creates idyllic landscapes populated with curious creatures. Her paintings are poetic, lyrical and whimsical.

West Africa: The Road & The Quarry: David Pace
San Francisco Bay-area artist David Pace has been photographing in the West African country of Burkina Faso for over a decade. He lives for more than a month every year in the same house in the remote farming village of Bereba where he documents aspects of daily life. This exhibition features images from two of Pace’s ongoing projects: “Sur La Route (On the Road)” and “The Karaba Brick Quarry.”

The Black Islands - Spirit and War in Melanesia (1994-2012): Ben Bohane
Since 1994, Vanuatu-based photojournalist Ben Bohane has lived and reported on the Pacific islands. This exhibit traces a photographic journey through these beautiful but sometimes dangerous islands. He dwells on a variety of kastom, cult and cargo cult movements, documenting their rituals and the hidden role they have sometimes played in island society.
