Drop/Add Deadline Is Today
The Drop/Add deadline is today, Monday, September 12. Please take a moment to verify your Fall 2016 schedule. If you have questions about your schedule, please stop by the Office of the Registrar or email registrar@uarts.edu. Although we are unable to register you for classes over the phone or through an email request, we will try to assist you with adjusting your schedule online. As always, contact your advisor, program or the Advising Center if you have any questions about your degree progress or what classes are most appropriate for you at this time. You will be unable to drop or add classes to your schedule after the deadline. To remove a class from your schedule after the Drop/Add deadline, you must withdraw. Withdrawal from a class will result in a grade of W for that class on your transcript.
UArts at 140: The Maker's Moment
The fall of 2016 is an exciting time for the University of the Arts, as it marks the launch of the University's 140th Anniversary Celebration, "The Maker's Moment." This yearlong series of events will honor our impressive past and begin moving forward with President David Yager's ambitious vision for the institution's future. Kicking off in October, the celebration will run through Commencement in May 2017, and feature a series of exciting events and activities, including:

A creative black tie fundraising gala featuring a performance by Philadelphia native and Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr.

Inauguration of President David Yager
The ceremony includes a video presentation of an honorary degree to Marvel Comics' Stan Lee (via video presentation) and to award-winning movie producer Ron Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine, Nebraska), as well as student music, dance and theater performances. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Faculty, Alumni Lead Barrymore Theater Award Nominations
Faculty and alumni from the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts and other UArts schools dominated the list of nominees for the 2016 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, presented annually by Theatre Philadelphia and recognizing the best of Philadelphia theater. Winners will be announced during a ceremony taking place October 24 at UArts' historic Merriam Theater.
Photo Alumna Nominated for Emmy Award
Photo historian, author, educator and alumna Deborah Willis BFA ’75 (Photography)has been nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy Award in the Outstanding Arts and Culture Programming category as producer for Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People. Inspired by her book Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present, the film premiered in February 2015 on PBS. The MacArthur and Guggenheim fellow is also the recipient of a 2016 Art Sanctuary Celebration of Black Arts Legacy Award. Winners of the 37th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be announced on September 21.
Student Film About Suicide Gaining Worldwide Recognition
Hanging, an animated short by senior Nick LeDonne '17 (Animation), is gaining worldwide recognition with a number of prestigious awards, accolades and screenings. A powerful story about LeDonne's personal struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, the animation made it into the semifinals of the 43rd Annual Student Academy Awards and was most recently named a Top 5 Finalist in the 59th CINE Golden Eagle Awards. Counseling Services will screen Hanging on September 22 at noon in Connelly Auditorium as part of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Recent Photography Alum Receives Prestigious Award
Recent alumnus CJ Harker BFA '14 (Photography) has been named a finalist in the Print Center's 90th Annual International Competition. Harker received the Trinity Framing Award from the Philadelphia-based gallery, which encourages the growth and understanding of photography and printmaking as vital contemporary arts through exhibits, publications and educational programs. The Print Center's Annual International Competition is one of the most prestigious and oldest juried exhibitions in the United States.

September is National Yoga Month! Join licensed instructor Dawn Reid (E-RYT, RYT500, RPYT) for this 12-class series sponsored by Staff Council. Open to all faculty, staff and students and suitable for all levels, this weekly 45-minute free workshop is a beneficial opportunity to cultivate mindfulness, flexibility and breathing techniques. Classes continue through December 7. Please note there is no class on September 21 (Town Hall Meeting) or November 23 (day before Thanksgiving).

PARK(ing) Day Philadelphia
School of Design students will participate in PARK(ing) Day Philadelphia, a city-wide event that "re-imagines the possibilities of 170 square feet of public space." Students will re-define the use of a parking space by constructing an installation in front of Hamilton Hall. Now in its ninth year, PARK(ing) Day celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in our urban areas.

West Africa: The Road & The Quarry: David Pace
San Francisco Bay-area artist David Pace has been photographing in the West African country of Burkina Faso for over a decade. He lives for more than a month every year in the same house in the remote farming village of Bereba where he documents aspects of daily life. This exhibition features images from two of Pace’s ongoing projects: “Sur La Route (On the Road)” and “The Karaba Brick Quarry.”

The Black Islands - Spirit and War in Melanesia (1994-2012): Ben Bohane
Since 1994, Vanuatu-based photojournalist Ben Bohane has lived and reported on the Pacific islands. This exhibit traces a photographic journey through these beautiful but sometimes dangerous islands. He dwells on a variety of kastom, cult and cargo cult movements, documenting their rituals and the hidden role they have sometimes played in island society.

Accomplished Visions: The Arabs: Samer Mohdad
Based in Lebanon, photographer Samer Mohdad’s work explores the concept of Arab identity. He traveled widely for many years in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, portraying the difficult everyday life of the people of these countries moving between war and faith, in unadorned and personal inside views and news.

Uncle Charlie: Marc Asnin
New York-based photographer Marc Asnin has been photographing his uncle Charlie for 30 years. By the early 1980s when Asnin was studying photography, the reality of his uncle’s life had trampled his boyhood fantasy.
