Students, Faculty/Alum Perform at DNC
Students Devin Farrell ’17 (Vocal Performance) and Brittany Luna ’18 (Vocal Performance) and faculty/alumna EJ Park MM ’13 (Jazz Studies) performed live with legendary singer/songwriter Carole King and retro rocker Lenny Kravitz during the Democratic National Convention held in Philadelphia July 25-28.

Graphic Design Students Advance to Adobe Awards Semifinals
Graphic Design students Matthew Roop ’17, Sidney Boria ’17 and James Kwak ’17have advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 Adobe Design Achievement Awards, a global digital media competition for student creators presented by software giant Adobe Systems. The submitted project, titled “Process,” featured an array of materials the students created for the School of Design’s spring 2016 exhibition. Also contributing to “Process” were recent alumni and staff members Ben Brotman BFA ’13 (Graphic Design), the University’s in-house graphic designer who served as project manager, and Monica Morris BFA ’15 (Sculpture), the School of Design’s administrative assistant who coordinated the project. Winners will be announced in September.

'NY Times' Interviews 'Gremlins' Director/Alum Joe Dante
Film director Joe Dante BFA ’68 (Photography/Film), whose movie credits include "Gremlins," "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," "Piranha," "The Howling" and "Twilight Zone: The Movie," was interviewed in the August 3 issue of The New York Times. The article focuses on a retrospective titled “Joe Dante at the Movies,” which runs through August 24 as part of the “BAMcinématek” program at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Read the article >>

Dance Alum Wins 2016 Princess Grace Award
Congratulations to alum Marc Crousillat BFA ’13 (Dance), who was named a 2016 Princess Grace Award winner in the Dance Performance & Choreography category. The awards are presented by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, which carries on the legacy of Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco and annually honors a new group of emerging artists in theater, dance and film. Crousillat is one of the youngest professional dance artists to receive this prestigious award.

Voice Alumna Performs at Phillies Game
Recent alumna Natalie Bermudez BM '16 (Vocal Performance) performed "Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the 7th Inning Stretch at the Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants game held at Citizen’s Bank Park on August 3.

Article by Photo Faculty Member Featured in 'Zócalo'
An article titled “A Punk Rock Tour Across Europe Gave Me Hope for Philly’s Revival” by Photography Master Lecturer Vincent Feldman was featured in Zócalo Public Square, an L.A.-based online publication that features “an innovative blend of ideas journalism and live events.” In the piece, Feldman talks about how photographing his hometown’s urban neglect captured the hidden potential in a city’s ruins. Core Studies Faculty Member Receives Fellowship
Congratulations to Michelle Oosterbaan, a master lecturer in the College of Art, Media & Design’s Core Studies program, who is the recipient of a $6,000 Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Visual Arts in the Drawing/Painting category. The Independence Foundation Fellowships were created to help individual artists take the next step in their personal artistic growth and development. Read more >>

ArtsWeek Lecture: Rachel Wetzel
As part of the 2016 ArtsWeek and the UArts Teaching with Primary Sources programming, the Professional Institute for Educators at the University of the Arts invites you to a lecture with Rachel Wetzel, photograph conservator at the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts. The talk, titled "Conservation Science and the Daguerreotype: Preserving Our Earliest Photographic Treasures," is free and open to the public.

Knowing Dance More: Boris Charmatz
Presented by the School of Dance, "Knowing Dance More" is a series of lectures, conversations and informal showings led by important artists and scholars in the international field of dance. Community consultant and former Dance/UP executive director Lois Welk will engage choreographer Boris Charmatz in a public conversation focusing on artistic practice, public participation and the evolution of a new vision for dance as a time-based visual art. Charmatz is well known for his innovative and provocative post-modern choreographic work.

Accomplished Visions: The Arabs: Samer Mohdad
Based in Lebanon, photographer Samer Mohdad’s work explores the concept of Arab identity. He traveled widely for many years in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, portraying the difficult everyday life of the people of these countries moving between war and faith, in unadorned and personal inside views and news.

West Africa: The Road & The Quarry: David Pace
San Francisco Bay-area artist David Pace has been photographing in the West African country of Burkina Faso for over a decade. He lives for more than a month every year in the same house in the remote farming village of Bereba where he documents aspects of daily life. This exhibition features images from two of Pace’s ongoing projects: “Sur La Route (On the Road)” and “The Karaba Brick Quarry.”

Sarah Jacoby is an illustrator and artist, a writer and all around creative thinker and maker. She creates idyllic landscapes populated with curious creatures. Her paintings are poetic, lyrical and whimsical.
