Thinking About the Future: A Town Hall Meeting
President David Yager invites faculty and staff to a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the future of UArts.

UArts Celebrates 140 Years of Making
The fall of 2016 is an exciting time for the University of the Arts, as it marks the launch of the University's 140th Anniversary Celebration, "The Maker's Moment." This yearlong series of events will honor our impressive past and begin moving forward with President David Yager's ambitious vision for the institution's future. Kicking off in October, the celebration will run through Commencement in May 2017, and feature a series of exciting events and activities, including:

140th Anniversary Gala
A star-powered, Grammy-style gala featuring Philadelphia native and Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr., and performances by some of UArts’ most renowned ensembles.

Inauguration of President David Yager
We will ceremoniously welcome President Yager to the University of the Arts community. A ceremony highlight will be the presentation of an honorary degree to the creative genius behind Marvel Comics, the iconic Stan Lee. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Fall 2016 Building Hours
Effective today, Monday, August 29, Anderson Hall, Merriam Hall and Terra Hall will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m. Hamilton Hall will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no after-hours access to academic buildings, which will be closed nightly from 2 a.m. until 7 a.m. Hamilton Hall evening hours are primarily to allow late access (until 2 a.m.) to the CAMD Furness Studios in the back of Hamilton Hall. The front entry to Hamilton will close at 8 p.m. weekdays, but the Furness Studios will be accessible through the Pine Street entry. For the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 5, all academic buildings will be fully closed. Residence halls will be accessible to residents as per usual.

NEWS
School of Film Professor Featured in 'Hollywood Reporter'
School of Film Assistant Professor Michael Attie, who holds an MFA in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University, is listed as one of the school’s “Notable Alumni” in a Hollywood Reporter article that ranks the top 25 American film schools (Stanford is No. 12). 

'Philadelphia Inquirer' Interviews Theater Alumna
1812 Productions co-founder and artistic director Jennifer Childs BFA '90 (Theater) is featured in a Philadelphia Inquirer article about the comedy theater company’s series The View From My Stoop. Part of 1812’s political farce show This Is the Week That Is, Childs plays Patsy, a fiercely opinionated South Philly matriarch of undefined middle age who answers questions and offers her "bi-non-partisan" two cents from her fictitious Shunk Street row house.

Alum's Feature Film Screens Nationwide
Natural Selection, a new feature film by alumnus Chad Scheifele BFA ’09 (Film + Video), opened nationwide this August, including in Philadelphia, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago. The film, an expansion of Scheifele’s thesis project that won Best of Show at the 2009 senior showcase, screened for a week at the PFS Roxy Theater in Philly.

Professor Emerita Appointed to Wilmington College Board
Professor Emerita Carol Moore has been appointed to the Wilmington (Ohio) College Board of Trustees, where she will serve on the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs committees. Moore is the former director of the MFA in Studio Art program and her work is currently on view in the retired faculty exhibit, Influences.

'Curate This, Philly' Features Photo Faculty/Alumna
Assistant Professor of Photography Julianna Foster MFA '06 (Book Arts + Printmaking) was invited by Curate This, Philly – a collaborative platform for artists to drive and define the conversation about the arts in Philadelphia – to curate content based on prompts by the editors. The curator answers one prompt themselves and hands off two more prompts to artist friends.

The University of the Arts' Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by the Creative Writing program and features acclaimed contemporary writers who visit campus each year. This reading features Annie Liontas, whose debut novel, Let Me Explain You (Scribner), was featured in The New York Times Book Review as Editor's Choice and selected by the American Book Association as a 2015 Indies Introduce Debut and Indies Next title.

Presented by the School of Dance, "Knowing Dance More" is a series of lectures, conversations and informal showings led by important artists and scholars in the international field of dance. Accomplished Visions: The Arabs: Samer Mohdad
Based in Lebanon, photographer Samer Mohdad’s work explores the concept of Arab identity. He traveled widely for many years in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, portraying the difficult everyday life of the people of these countries moving between war and faith, in unadorned and personal inside views and news.

West Africa: The Road & The Quarry: David Pace
San Francisco Bay-area artist David Pace has been photographing in the West African country of Burkina Faso for over a decade. He lives for more than a month every year in the same house in the remote farming village of Bereba where he documents aspects of daily life. This exhibition features images from two of Pace’s ongoing projects: “Sur La Route (On the Road)” and “The Karaba Brick Quarry.”
