UArts is first and only U.S. school invited to 'Camping 2016'

The University of the Arts’ School of Dance has received a prestigious invitation to "Camping 2016," the Centre National de la Danse's international showcase and workshop being held in Paris, France, this month. The invitation marks the first time in the history of the workshop that an American school has been selected for this important event. UArts is among 16 of the world’s top dance centers to receive the coveted invite and will perform a piece by Netta Yerushalmy as part of the showcase on June 25.

"We are honored and thrilled to be presented with the incredible opportunity to perform and explore the boundaries of dance alongside the most remarkable list of dance centers in the world," said Donna Faye Burchfield, director of the School of Dance. "I have been working in this field for over 30 years and I know that receiving the invite to 'Camping' is a true testament to UArts’ growing international reputation. During the course of the program, we will have the unique experience to network with faculty, artists and directors across the globe, to share ideas and foster closer ties."

Now in its second year, "Camping" is an international platform and artistic camp, renowned for hosting the world’s best choreographers and performers. From June 20 to July 1, four professors and 12 Dance students from the University of the Arts will participate in a series of workshops, discussions and performances designed to foster shared growth among these highly respected international dance centers. In addition to Burchfield, the other faculty members attending are Nial Jones, Douglas Becker and Lauren Bakst.

Prestigious dance schools selected for "Camping 2016" include the Inter-University Center for Dance of Berlin, Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, and the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Brussels (P.A.R.T.S.), among others.

Earlier this year, UArts was ranked No. 4 on College Magazine's list of the Top 10 Schools for Dance, alongside Juilliard, the Ailey School and New York University.

The Centre National de la Danse (CND or National Dance Center) is an institution sponsored by the French Ministry of Culture. Established in 1998 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the CND is described as being "located at the crossroads of dance culture, creation, dissemination and pedagogy."
