Mary Phelan
I love how through the slow process of building a printed image you are able to wander through and discover meaning.
In her work, Mary Phelan explores the psychology of loss and its resulting sense of personal displacement. Working across the mediums of printmaking and photography, the development of an interior narrative reveals itself in both hand-printed and digitally produced books and prints.
Mary has served as Coordinator of the undergraduate Printmaking + Book Arts program, and was a co-founder and director of the MFA Book Arts + Printmaking program. Her involvement in professional organizations such as SGC International, the College Book Art Association, the Print Center, Second State Press and the American Printing History Association has opened many professional pathways for students over the years.
Her projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are part of many museum and university collections. Traveling extensively her most recent residency was at the American Academy in Rome. Mary received her MA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BS in Art Education from the College of Saint Rose.
