Generations Newsletter November 2022

Letter from the Editor

It is already November, and that means our students will be home for winter break soon! Be sure to read further down in the newsletter for more information about the move-out process.

With the season of thanks upon us, I feel that as a community we have a lot to be thankful for!  My daughter is a senior and as I look back on her experience at UArts, the first thing that comes to mind is gratefulness. I am grateful that she chose UArts, for the education she is receiving and for the people who make it all happen! Bringing the mission of advancing human creativity to life is not achieved without the faculty and staff who collaborate behind the scenes to make every creative enhancement materialize. One such enhancement is the new Inspiration Lab (iLab) Artist-in-Residence program which brings established artists to campus to share their talent, experiences and wisdom with current UArts students. What a terrific learning opportunity!

Do you have a positive experience or story about UArts that you would like to share? If so, please submit it through the “Share Your UArts Stories” section below.  We would love to hear from you!

Lastly, a reminder that UArts will participate in GivingTuesday, a national day of generosity, on Nov. 29. See below for more information about this upcoming event.

In closing I wish everyone a happy and healthy rest of the semester!

Respectfully,

Marian Maier

Understanding the Academic Calendar

Each year, we get questions from students and families seeking clarification on our academic calendar. We do our best to clarify what each of the dates mean, but if you still find yourself asking questions about when classes start or when residence halls open, read on to find out more.

Parent’s Guide to Advising and Registration for Spring 2023

Advising and registration for spring and summer 2023 is coming up! Advising begins Oct. 24, and registration begins Nov. 14. All current students plan and register their spring courses in Student Self Service with the help of their advisors. New incoming students will be registered by their advisors and departments.

Advising period: Oct. 24–Nov. 13, 2022
Registration period: Nov. 14, 2022–Feb. 6, 2023

Students’ registration start times are assigned based on class level and the number of credits they’ve completed. For example, most seniors begin registration Monday, Nov. 14, while first-year students will begin registration on Thursday, Nov. 17. Registration stays open until the second week of the spring semester (Feb. 6), but students should be fully registered when registration opens for them and by the end of the fall semester.

Every student is assigned two advisors: one academic advisor in the Advising Center and one faculty advisor in their major. Students’ advisors are listed in Student Self Service.

Both faculty and academic advisors will contact students about advising, and students may reach out to their advisors anytime.

Summer is a great time for students to catch up, get ahead or spend some extra time learning and earning credits. Summer 2023 courses will be offered July 5–Aug. 8, and students can register for them along with their spring courses. Courses in Art History, Critical Dialogues, Business, and Psychology and Writing are available and offered at the special estimated rate of $645 per three-credit course. (Summer courses are not included in the academic year tuition).

A complete guide to advising, registration and degree planning is available in the University Catalog’s Registration Overview.

Advising & Registration Steps

  1. Students review their academic plan for their individual program and catalog year. (Academic plans provide a term-by-term recommended course sequence.)

  2. They review their degree progress and course plan in Student Self Service.

  3. Registration or academic record holds are resolved. Some holds might prevent students from registering.

  4. Students plan their schedule for the upcoming term.

  5. They then schedule to meet with their individual advisors.

  6. Degree progress and course plans are reviewed by advisors.

  7. Finally, students register for planned course sections on or after their registration appointment time.

If your student has questions, encourage them to contact the Advising Center at advising@uarts.edu

Things to note

  • The first day of classes for the spring semester is Monday, Jan. 23.

  • Advising doesn’t end at the end of the advising period. If your student still needs help planning their courses, they can work with their advisor and the Advising Center at any time.

  • Registration remains open until Feb. 6, 2023. Students can make changes or add courses to their schedule up until that date.

  • Though registration remains open, students should be registered in full by the end of the fall semester. Advisors reach out to students who are not registered or partially registered in the final weeks of the semester.

  • Graduating seniors will hear from their advisors and the Office of the Registrar if they are not on track to graduate and need to make adjustments to their spring schedule to get back on track. Seniors should carefully review their requirements in Student Self Service to ensure they are completing everything they need in order to graduate.

  • Advising is a time for students not only to plan schedules and review degree requirements, but also to explore opportunities and options and ask questions or discuss concerns regarding their academic progress.

Fall Break: Campus Closures

Fall break is Nov. 23–27, and no classes will be held during this time. The university offices will close at 3 p.m. on Nov. 23 through Nov. 25 for fall break; however, the residence halls will remain open 24 hours, and students may reside in their assigned residence hall over the break. Dining services are closed for the break. Here is the dining schedule over fall break.

  • Terra Market: Closes Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. and reopens Nov. 27 at 4 p.m.
  • Mangia: Closed Nov. 23–27

Since campus dining locations are closed for the break, students who are staying on campus for the break should order extra prepared food or purchase groceries from Terra Market prior to it closing on Nov. 23. Terra Market plans to have more prepared items and groceries available before to the break, so students may purchase these items in advance.

If your student chooses to stay on campus over break, note that Campus Life will host events in the residence halls each day for students who choose to stay on campus. These events will be advertised via email to students, and flyers will be posted in the residence halls to advertise them.

Winter Break Preparations

Winter break is fast approaching. In our next newsletter, we’ll share specific details about how to help your student prepare to leave their residence hall. However, here are a few important things to keep in mind as you begin planning for winter break.

Important Dates

  • Residence halls close Saturday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m.
  • Residence halls reopen Sunday, Jan. 22, at 9 a.m.

Preparing for Winter Break

When students vacate the residence halls, they may leave their personal belongings behind in their spaces, but we encourage them to take home or lock up any valuables (i.e., cash, laptops and jewelry), and they should bring any items home they may need (i.e. medication, chargers, etc.), as they will not be able to access the residence hall again until it reopens Jan. 22.

Students are also required to leave their spaces clean upon leaving for winter break and should make plans to dispose of any perishable items, wipe crumbs from the countertops, dispose of trash, etc. A full list of cleaning requirements will be shared with students in December.

Save the Date: GivingTuesday

Nov. 29, 2022, is GivingTuesday, a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. This year, UArts is celebrating the many forms of generosity. We are challenging our community to get involved in the way you choose. Join us Nov. 29 to learn more about ways to get involved and make a difference in your community.

Presidential Search Update

After six years of service, University of the Arts President and CEO David Yager will retire June 30, 2023. The university has launched an open and collaborative search process, gathering and incorporating input from the entire university community to support the successful identification and recruitment of UArts’ next leader. To assist in this process, UArts’ Board of Trustees has retained the services of Isaacson, Miller, a mission-focused leadership recruitment firm with vast experience in the higher education and arts sectors. The board expects to have President Yager’s successor in place by July 1, 2023.
