A Letter from the Editor

Dear UArts Families,

The first semester of the 2021–2022 school year is coming to a close. As they say, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” So, what made this semester fly by with fun? My daughter Jess, an MBET major, was ecstatic to get back into the sound studios. Hands-on learning was one thing she really enjoys and greatly missed. She was happy to be back doing sound for the performances starring her fellow UArtists!

I polled Parent Council members and asked them what their students found to be a highlight of this past semester.

Shannon Sullivan shared that performing with a live audience again was a great highlight! One of the first assignments in her MTP class was to come prepared with a song, a monologue or a dance and perform it in front of the other students. The instructor told the students to “show off.” And they did just that!

Julia Buckley, a third-year Illustration major, shared that her wow moment for the semester was the sense of camaraderie she felt being among her fellow students, friends and professors once in-person classes resumed. After such a long time away from the UArts campus, she called it a “family reunion.” She has developed a deeper appreciation for her very hardworking and talented professors and the live reconnection with her UArts family network.

As we close the semester, I hope the freshman students enjoyed a strong start on their college path. Upperclassmen, I hope you are cherishing the memories you are making during the best time of your life! Seniors, relish the last of your college days and best of luck in your final semester. I wish all the UArts families a happy, safe and healthy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Marian Maier

Leaving Residence Halls

As we approach the end of the semester, students are required to vacate their residence hall no later than Friday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m. They may have up to two non-UArts guests assist them with vacating their residence hall. Those guests must wear face coverings for the duration of their time on campus, including in the resident’s room and all common areas of the residence hall. The guests must stay with their resident for the duration of their time on campus and are permitted in the residence hall for no more than four hours to assist the student with removing the items they plan to take with them over the break.

As students leave their residence halls and return home for winter break, it is important that they prepare their space to be closed while they are away. We ask that residents complete the following tasks.

  • Unplug all personal appliances (except their fridge and microwave).

  • Take home or lock up all valuables (i.e., cash, laptop, jewelry).

  • Remove all belongings from the floor (put clothes and items away or on their bed, etc.).

  • Take out all trash to dumpsters, trash cans, recycling bins or trash rooms.

  • Empty the fridge and/or discard perishables.

  • Discard all non-refrigerated, perishable food items, including fruit, decorative pumpkins, etc.

  • Place any non-refrigerated, nonperishable open food items in sealable containers, like Tupperware or plastic bags (i.e., chip bags, cereal bags, etc.).

  • Wash all dirty dishes and put them away.

  • Wipe down and clean all counters and surfaces.

  • Move items away from the heater and remove any item on top of the heater.

  • Close all windows, turn off all lights and lock the apartment door.
