A Parent’s Guide to Advising & Registration for Spring 2021

A Parent’s Guide to Advising & Registration for Spring 2021

Registration for the spring semester 2021 is underway! All current students plan and register their courses for next semester in Student Self Service with the help of their advisors. Incoming students will be registered by their advisors and departments.

Advising: Nov. 9 – Nov. 20, 2020
Registration: Nov. 30 – Feb. 8, 2021

Advising began Nov. 9, and registration began Nov. 30. Students’ registration start times are assigned based on class level and number of credits completed. For example, most senior students began registering Monday, Nov. 30, while first-year students began Thursday, Dec. 3. Registration stays open until the end of the registration period, which is Feb. 8, 2021.

Every student is assigned two advisors: one academic advisor from the Advising Center assigned to their school and one faculty advisor from their major program. Students can find their advisors listed in Student Self Service.

Major program advisors and center advisors contact students about advising. Students may reach out to their advisors anytime.

A complete guide to advising, registration and degree planning is available in the university catalogue.

Advising & Registration Steps

  1. Students review the academic plan for their individual programs and catalogue year. (Academic plans provide a term-by-term recommended course sequence.)

  2. They review their degree progress and course plan in Student Self Service.

  3. Registration or academic record holds are resolved. Some holds prevent students from being able to register.

  4. Students plan their schedules for the upcoming term.

  5. They then schedule to meet with their individual advisors.

  6. Degree progress and course plans are reviewed by advisors.

  7. Finally, students register for planned course sections on or after their registration appointment time.

If your student has questions, encourage them to contact the Advising Center at advising@uarts.edu

Things to note

  • The first day of classes for the spring semester is Jan. 25.

  • Advising doesn’t end at the end of the advising period. If your student still needs help planning their courses, they can work with their advisor and the Advising Center at any time.

  • Registration is open until Feb. 8, 2021. Students can make changes or add courses to their schedule up until that date.

  • Students should be registered in full by the end of the fall semester. Advisors reach out to students who are not registered or partially registered in the final weeks of the semester and before the spring semester.

  • Graduating seniors will hear from their advisors and the Office of the Registrar if they are not on track to graduate and need to make adjustments to their spring schedule to get back on track. Seniors should carefully review their requirements in Student Self Service to ensure they are completing everything they need to in order to graduate.

  • Advising is a time for students  not only to plan schedules and review degree requirements, but also to explore opportunities and options and ask questions or discuss concerns regarding their academic progress.
