Generations August 2022

A Letter from the Editor

Dear UArts families,

Welcome back, everyone! “Back to School” stirs up a mix of emotions for students, parents and families alike. Our sophomores and juniors are excited to see their friends and continue perfecting their talents. Our first-year students are enthusiastic, yet nervous, about starting a new adventure. Our seniors, though anticipating graduation, are nervous about final critiques and juries, as well as their future careers. Parents and guardians are sharing all of these emotions, if not more. No matter how anxious you may be as a student, parent or family member about the start of a new year at UArts, there is one thing you can be certain of: You made the right choice!

This August, I write to you as the parent of a senior student. As such, I feel qualified to say with conviction that your student is receiving the best arts education available! At UArts, the whole student— physically, emotionally and academically—is considered in the educational process. The faculty and staff are exceptional. The studios, theaters and classrooms are state-of-the-art, creating the richest learning experiences available. And President Yager is extraordinary in carrying out his mission to advance creativity in every student.

Rest assured that this will be an excellent school year for you and your student. I invite you to read Generations every month to stay informed about what’s happening at UArts and around campus.  Scrolling down and signing up for the alerts and campus guides available to you is key to staying in the loop and being aware of the support available to your students.

For those new to UArts, welcome! This is just the beginning of a talented and creative academic year!

Respectfully,

Marian Maier

Move-In Guidelines

As we welcome students and their families to UArts, safety is our top priority. Due to the number of people that will be attending check-in and move-in, we will be requiring all people (including students and our move-in staff) to wear masks at check-in and move-in and while in any public spaces, including, hallways, elevators, etc.

New Student Move-In: Aug. 23

  • 9:30 a.m.–11 a.m.: Last names A–E
  • 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.: Last names F–K
  • 12:30 p.m.–2 p.m.: Last names L–Q
  • 2 p.m.–3:30 p.m.: Last names R–Z

Check-in Instructions for New Students

When students come to check in, they’ll first stop at Hamilton Hall at 320 S. Broad St. to pick up their student ID and room keys. At that time, they will also ensure that their bill is paid and that we have all required health forms on file. This process should happen quickly as long as they’ve previously submitted their ID photo, paid their bill and submitted their health forms.

From there, they can go to their residence hall and unload their belongings with the assistance of our move-in helpers. We’ll have carts available to help make the move-in process run smoothly. Note: Anticipate unloading your vehicle, and then be ready to move it to an off-campus lot for parking, as we do not have designated parking on campus–we only have spaces for unloading items from your car.

Returning Student Residential Move-In: Aug. 25

Returning students can move in anytime from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 25. If they will not arrive by 4 p.m., they will need to go to the Public Safety desk at their residence hall and request the RA on duty to assist them in getting keys to their room and getting them checked in. Note: After 4 p.m., move-in helpers will no longer be available to assist them.

Move-In Instructions for Returning Students

Returning students should arrive at their residence hall with their student ID. If they no longer have a student ID, they should stop first at Student Financial Services in Hamilton Hall to get a new one made. Once they are checked in and receive their keys from Campus Life staff, they can begin unloading their belongings with the assistance of our move-in helpers.

Welcome Weekend

Welcome Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27, and is dedicated to welcoming all UArts students to campus and celebrating the start of the school year! Students can expect to participate in activities across campus like meeting our student clubs and organizations at the Student Activities Fair or going to the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Philadelphia Zoo, Magic Gardens and more during our Dive into Philly events. The day will end with our annual Glow Dance Party in Solmssen Court.
