Summary:

The University of the Arts is a diverse and vibrant community of artists and creators, working together to advance human creativity. The Center for Teaching & Learning Design, within the University Libraries, supports UArts’ faculty in their roles as teachers. Leading this Center, the Director for Teaching & Learning Design is responsible for the creation and delivery of new and continuing programs to support faculty professional development, research-based educational practices, and effective instructional technology integration.

The Director for Teaching & Learning Design brings skills in instructional technology, course and program design, instruction, and inclusive pedagogies to their work with faculty across the visual and performing arts, general education, and graduate and professional programs. They provide support and guidance for the design, development, and delivery of UArts courses across all modalities: in-person, hybrid, and online synchronous or asynchronous. They keep faculty up-to-date on developments in educational technology and are the primary administrator for the University’s LMS (Canvas). They collaborate with faculty to develop curricular objectives, select instructional and assessment techniques, and leverage relevant technologies, with the shared goal of fostering an inclusive physical and digital environment to support students’ artistic and academic success. They help UArts faculty deliver the best versions of their courses.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Consult with academic departments and individual faculty to design and develop course structure, materials, and activities, and to leverage existing and emerging technologies that support student learning.
  • Develop and deliver professional development and continuing education opportunities for faculty on relevant pedagogical and technology topics.
  • Organize and facilitate orientation for new full- and part-time faculty.
  • Provide training and resources for faculty in online pedagogy, learning design, the University's learning management system, and related instructional technologies.
  • Convene and chair the Teaching & Learning Support Team, an interdepartmental committee.
  • Lead campus efforts to develop and ensure compliance with internal and external standards and guidelines for distance-delivered courses.
  • Collaborate with the leadership of academic departments to develop hybrid and online synchronous and asynchronous course offerings, as approved. Help support students and faculty as they transition to new modes of learning.
  • Work closely with faculty and the Office of Educational Accessibility (OEA) to ensure that digital course materials meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) requirements for accessibility.
  • Work closely with the Provost’s Office to identify program and course goals and promote evidence-based pedagogical practices to achieve learning outcomes.
  • Work closely with the Provost’s Office to develop and promote syllabus guidelines and templates for faculty.
  • Research and incorporate industry trends, evidence-based instructional strategies, quality measures, and educational technologies, and share these results with the appropriate stakeholders across the University.
  • Administers the University’s learning management system, focusing on the student and faculty user experience.

Education:

  • Coursework or equivalent experience in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, and/or learning theory.
  • A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Professional experience or coursework in instructional design, educational technologies, and learning theory.
  • Experience assisting faculty in course design; higher education experience is desirable.
  • Experience with deploying educational technologies, including a learning management system. Experience with Canvas is desirable.
  • Experience applying diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles in an educational setting.
  • Experience applying digital accessibility standards and practices.
  • Instructional experience is highly desirable, especially delivering instruction to adult learners.
  • Experience with arts education is desirable, especially in higher education.

  • Knowledge of instructional design and strategies, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and inclusive teaching, learning theories, and current and emerging educational technologies
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within teams
  • Ability to design, develop, and deliver interactive training to groups and individuals
  • Ability to write and edit instructional material and training documentation
  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical staff and faculty
  • Skill in creating content using a variety of graphics, multimedia, productivity, web-based, and social media applications
  • Ability to learn quickly new educational and productivity technologies
