As an artist, an educator and an advocate, Claudia Eckel Buchanan believes that a quality art education should be universally available and personally meaningful to every student.

Biography

Claudia Eckel Buchanan is an art educator and an artist. In 2017, she earned her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), Philadelphia. She earned her MEd in 2013 from Gratz College, in Melrose Park, Pennsylvania, and a BS in Art Education from the Pennsylvania State University in 2007. From 2009 to present, Buchanan has been an art educator at Garnet Valley High School, Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; a National Art Honor Society sponsor; and an advanced placement art instructor. 

Buchanan most recently had a solo exhibition in 2019, What Your Heart is For, at the Speer Gallery in Haverford, Pennsylvania, in addition to having contributed to multiple group exhibitions.

Experience

Buchanan has extensive teaching experience, including 

  • 15 years of experience teaching secondary art at Garnet Valley High School, Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; 

  • specialization in drawing, painting, pre-college and advanced placement courses; and

  • building community partnerships through the arts with the National Art Honor Society.

Awards & Accolades

She has won awards for both teaching and art making, including  

  • the Sun East Federal Credit Union “Best Teacher Under the Sun” Award in 2016 and 

  • the PAFA O’Neill/Ruben award for outstanding thesis presentation in 2017.
