JOB TITLE: Area Coordinator

DEPARTMENT:  Campus Life

REPORTS TO: Director for Residence Life and Housing

Summary:

The Area Coordinator is a live-on position that manages the residential community at UArts. In this position, the Area Coordinator is responsible for fostering community through educational and social initiatives, supervising Resident Assistants, and promoting health and safety standards in the residence halls. This is a live-on, 12 month position and serves as a member of the On-Duty crisis response team that participates in a weekly on-call crisis response rotation and handles crises as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage UArts’ residential area which includes four buildings made up of 600+ students
  • Coordinate the planning, implementation, and assessment of the community building model which guides residential programming throughout the academic year
  • Supervise and evaluate a staff of 29 Resident Assistants and two Graduate Assistants and conduct regular staff and individual supervisory meetings
  • Coordinate student staff recruitment, selection and trainings including professional development opportunities under the direction of the Director for Residence Life and Housing
  • Alongside the Director for Residence Life and Housing conduct regular building walkthroughs, health and safety room inspections, submit work orders, assist in the damage assessment process, and manage the opening and closing of residential facilities
  • Respond to critical issues in the residence halls including roommate disputes, facility concerns and disciplinary issues
  • Serve in the 12 month On-Duty rotation at a Professional on Duty level for crisis response to support students in critical situations and be a resource to student staff
  • Serve as a disciplinary hearing officer for low level Community Standards cases and aid in student’s developmental growth through hearing conversations
  • Support the Summer Institute program by hiring, supervising and training student staff as Community Assistants and serving in the Summer Institute on-call duty rotation
  • Assist during large scale events hosted by Campus Life; including but not limited to: Orientation, Resident Assistant/Community Advisor Trainings, RA banquet, Student Leadership Awards celebration, UArts Day, and UArts Weekend
  • Assist in day-to-day activities as needed in the Office of Campus Life

Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required.  A Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Education, Student Affairs, or similar area is preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in residence life, student activities or related field.
  • 1-2 years on call crisis response experience preferred.

  • General knowledge of student development theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a welcoming, safe and healthy environment for students.

  • Ability to devise and host training sessions for students.
  • Ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others.

  • Ability to demonstrate concern for satisfying one’s external and/or internal customers.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends throughout the year.
  • Ability to work in an on-call crisis response duty rotation being on-call 24/7 for one week at a time approximately 8 weeks a year.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • The Area Coordinator supervises paraprofessional staff members such as Resident Assistants, Community Assistants and a Graduate Assistant.
