Create something that is as meaningful as it is beautiful through the study of Glass. If you are passionate about working with your hands and have a desire to express yourself through glass and glassblowing, look no further than UArts. As part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Craft + Material Studies program, our Glass concentration allows you to engage with the ideas and concepts that drive your art through technical instruction from accomplished artists. Your in-studio instruction will be hands-on, yet rooted in investigation of meaning and content.
Topics covered include the use of color in glass, two and three-dimensional surface treatment, the relationship between volume and skin of forms, blowing into molds and working in a variety of scales. Projects provide you with broad exposure to the many possibilities inherent in the medium.
Student Experience
You'll work with glassblowing furnaces and hammers, but you'll also have hands-on access to all the culture and resources the vibrant city of Philadelphia has to offer. While studying Glass at UArts, you'll learn to produce a range of pieces, from blown glass to glass art to installation and experimental/new genres. You'll have the opportunity to control of all aspects of making, from initial design to final finished piece.

University of the Arts' Glass faculty are all accomplished working artists whose pieces have been shown in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian and other museums around the world. As teachers and mentors, their guidance can help propel you to create extraordinary objects and express your creative voice.
Curriculum
At the heart of the curriculum of the Craft and Material Studies major with a concentration Glass is the notion of thinking through making. Glass students are passionate about working with their hands and about discussing the ideas and concepts underlying their art. Glass students learn to express themselves through material and process. A student who pursues Craft and Material Studies will work closely with an advisor to determine the curricular path that best matches their artistic goals.
Students who complete the Craft and Material Studies major with a concentration in Glass will

Demonstrate independent, creative problem solving and original thinking. They exhibit a distinct and personal approach to art making.

Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary issues and historical precedents. They have an appreciation for experimentation/innovation as well as for the traditions of making as applied to contemporary craft practice.

Acquire and demonstrate the professional skills needed to be successful as artists, entrepreneurs, designers for industry and productive citizens.

Be able to talk and write about art (including their own work) critically, intelligently and with considerable insight.

Acquire the level of technical skill required for them to reach their career goals. They establish a work practice appropriate to their ideas and demonstrate a deep familiarity with materials and processes.
