Sent to all residential students March 20, 2020

Good afternoon,

At this time, you have likely seen President Yager's email that details our response to the new directive by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf. Effective immediately, Residence Halls are closed for the remainder of the semester. Only those students who have been given expressed permission by the Office of Residence Life to remain in their residence hall space will have access to residential buildings.

Residential students who are currently away from campus should not return to campus to collect any items. Any students who previously planned to return to campus this weekend for priority items should not do so. When it is safe and feasible to do so, we will announce plans for residential students to return to collect their belongings. Until that time, we will hold all residents’ belongings just as we do during our Winter Break closing.

Residence Life and Student Affairs staff will be visiting each room on campus to secure the building for your extended absence. This includes; closing windows, turning off lights, unplugging electronics (refrigerators will remain plugged in), disposing of any trash or perishable items that may rot or attract pests, adjusting HVAC, and locking doors. If any perishable items are disposed of in your room, you will receive an email notification from our staff the week of March 23. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Sara Pyle
Assistant Vice President for Student Services

FAQ & Important Information

What happens if I left already and cannot come back, but I need a priority item (medication, textbook, etc.)?

Contact residence life at reslife@uarts.edu. We will work with you to identify next steps. We know this is a stressful time for students and parents alike, and housing and residential staff are available to support you through this transition.

Will we be refunded for our housing or meal plans?
For the unused portion of housing and meal plans, students will receive a prorated credit on their student accounts based on the amount they contributed to housing and/or meal plans which will be applied to the next academic year (across two semesters). Graduating seniors may request a refund of credit balances after all charges for the spring 2020 semester have been satisfied.

I won't be living on campus next year. Will the credit be applied to tuition and/or other fees?
Yes, in the instance that a student does not enroll in housing and/or a meal plan, the credit will be applied to your student account across two semesters and used against any active charges, which may include tuition and/or fees.

I may not be able to enroll next fall; how will I receive my credit?
Students facing hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic that may cause them to be unable to continue their studies should contact the Student Financial Services Office at finaid@uarts.edu to discuss their options. Students may also consider applying for the UArts Cares fund which provides support for those facing hardships that may impact their ability to complete the spring 2020 semester.

Who can I speak with if I am facing housing insecurity?

Students may apply for the UArts Cares fund which provides support for those facing hardships that may impact their ability to complete the spring 2020 semester. You may also email studentaffairs@uarts.edu about your concerns if you do not have anywhere to go. We know that this is a stressful time for students, and housing and residential staff are available to support you through this transition with compassion.

When will the Residence Halls re-open for move out?

UArts residence halls are closed for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester. Details about a formal move out will be communicated once it is safe and feasible to do so.

What happens if I left already and cannot come back, but left items in my room?

Contact your residence life at reslife@uarts.edu. We will work with you to identify next steps.

When is Housing Selection for next year?

Housing Selection is now scheduled for April 15. Updates to the process, which will not be hosted online, will be emailed to all students.
