JOB TITLE: PT Shop Supervisor (Printmaking/Bindery/Papermaking)

DEPARTMENT:  School of Art

REPORTS TO: Program Director, School of Art, MFA Book Arts & Printmaking

Summary:

Reporting to the Program Director, this position is member of the shop membership team responsible for the safe operation and proper functioning of the University, classrooms and student studios including but not limited to: maintenance and repair of all tools & equipment, supervision of shop safety practices and OSHA compliance, student & faculty support, supervision of work study, assisting with resale, and assistance with events. Meets regularly to forward the mission and curriculum of the school.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Consults regularly with the Program Director and faculty to align classroom/studio instruction with shop instruction.
  • Reinforce classroom instruction by serving as an instructional resource, aiding and advising students on solving technical problems.
  • Nourish a culture of making, innovation, and experimentation.
  • Maintain papermaking studio, bindery, printmaking studios (etching, lithography, screenprinting, offset) on the 5th, 6th and 9th floors and individual MFA studio space in Anderson Hall.

Shop and Facility Maintenance

  • Repair and maintain studio tools and equipment. Coordinate the service of equipment with outside contractors when necessary.
  • Research and acquire new and replacement equipment when necessary. Stays current with equipment and shop capabilities to support curriculum.
  • Submit work orders and communicate with facilities on issues relating to building infrastructure (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.).
  • Maintain the hygiene of the studio by overseeing regular and proper sanitary practices on the part of students, facilities & the housekeeping staff.  Verify routine maintenance of filtration systems on the part of facilities & outside contractors.
  • Maintain the general appearance and organization of the studio. 
  • Research, budget, propose, plan & oversee studio renovations.
  • Assists with classroom and studio preparation when needed.

Supervision of Work Study Staff

  • Hire, train, schedule and supervise graduate assistants, work study students, and student monitors.

Safety & OSHA Compliance

  • Establish and maintain a culture that promotes the safe use of all facilities, equipment and materials.
  • Deliver studio guidelines & safety orientation to classes at the beginning of each semester.
  • Work with faculty and work study to ensure safe and proper usage of studio equipment, handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, and usage of personal protective equipment on the part of all students.
  • Monitors shop usage through safety training and consultation.
  • Maintains and updates SDS sheets; properly displays them for easy access in the case of an emergency.
  • Able to follow safety protocols in the case of an emergency

Resale/Supplies

  • Assist with the operation of the resale.
  • Assist with an annual inventory list to the Finance Department.
  • Manage shop related budget items, inventory and purchasing. Order and maintain sufficient levels of materials and supplies needed for general shop operation.

Student & Faculty Support

  • Assist faculty with the preparation of class materials.
  • Perform general assistance to faculty in the classroom as needed.
  • Answer student questions pertaining to proper equipment usage and technical processes when faculty are not present.

Special Events

  • Assist with School of Art events including visiting artist lectures & critiques, workshops and exhibitions.
  • Assist in preparing exhibition spaces for School of Art exhibitions.
  • Assist other areas as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • BFA or equivalent
  • Experience or general knowledge of the visual arts is desired but not required

Experience:

  • One-two years previous experience required

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of printmaking and papermaking tools and equipment and some knowledge of repair.
  • Working knowledge of techniques used for making fiber-based art.
  • Be able to work as a team with shop supervisors on campus.
  • Good interpersonal skills for student training and consultation
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Ability to work independently, setting priorities and with good follow through

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Oversees work study students and associated paperwork and job descriptions
