Summary: The University of the Arts Ira Brind School of Theater Arts seeks a forward-thinking Musical Theater specialist and educator who is motivated to build a national and internationally renowned Musical Theater program. The ideal candidate will have the foresight, training and experience to transform our existing undergraduate Musical Theater program into one that prepares students to meet the challenges of an evolving field. The new program director will work collaboratively with the other program directors and the dean of the school to reimagine a Musical Theater program that exposes students to a wide-range of theatrical languages and forms of expression that will ultimately serve to elevate and transform the students creative arts practice and the discipline over time. In addition to their administrative duties, the program director will teach related courses, and mentors students and faculty toward the creation and development of sustainable practices that encourage deeper investigations of form and content. The new program director shares the Brind School’s commitment to fostering a generative and safe space for bold investigation, and addressing social and curricular examination and implementation of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which are essential to the overall growth of the community as we honor the University’s mission to “advance human creativity.”  Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.

Education:

  • A terminal degree (i.e. MFA, PhD) in  musical theatre, or closely-related field

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of recent professional experience as musical theatre artist or scholar

  • 5-7 years college/university teaching experience

  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Candidates should be able to create a vision for the program, develop new courses and contribute ideas for the evolution of existing courses;

  • Candidates should have a commitment to advancing the musical theater discipline through the innovative use of evolving technologies and methodologies, traditional and new media;

  • Candidates should have a strong mastery of the musical theater form, as well as a demonstrated expansive inquiry toward its future evolution, and should inform creative practice with practical application;

  • Candidates should be familiar with professional fields adjacent to musical theater, possibly including but not limited to: dramaturgy, performance studies, acting, voice, movement, theater history and criticism, and directing, and exhibit an interest in exploring how these disciplines can effectively interact with musical theater;

  • Candidates should have strong connections to the musical theater and theater communities as evidenced through conference presentations, invited lectures and professional networks;

  • Candidates should have a commitment to a professional engagement with their own artistry.
