JOB TITLE: Part-Time Animation Instructors

Summary:

The Animation Department at University of the Arts located in Philadelphia, PA is seeking applicants for part time/adjunct positions on an ongoing basis, as upcoming positions can become available throughout the year for our undergraduate BFA programs. Classes are taught in-person on our campus in Center City, Philadelphia.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Part time faculty bring their active professional and personal creative practice experience to the classroom in addition to previous teaching experience at the college level, or other demonstrated instruction experience, and are expected to be motivational, curious, resilient, enthusiastic collaborators with the full spectrum of our diverse student population who have varied interests and focus areas within the program and art form.

The program is particularly interested in engaging practicing artists in the field who also have a passion for sharing knowledge with the next generation of animation artists and filmmakers.

The Part-Time Instructor in Animation should provide teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Introductory through advanced 3D modeling and lighting, character rigging, and animation (utilizing Maya)
  • 2D animation fundamentals, and 2D software techniques (utilizing Toon Boom Harmony and Adobe Animate, supported by Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro)
  • Advanced 2D animation focused studio skills including full 2D production pipeline experience in storyboarding, layout, design, animation, compositing, and 2D puppet design and rigging in Toon Boom Harmony
  • Preproduction fundamentals such as character design, prop design, and visual development
  • Filmmaking, storytelling, and editing concepts and storyboarding fundamentals and software techniques (utilizing Storyboard Pro)
  • Visual effects, compositing, and motion graphics (utilizing After Effects)
  • Stop motion animation fundamentals, camera and lighting techniques, fabrication of sets and puppets, and software techniques (utilizing Dragonframe)

Education:

  • Advanced degree in a related field and/or bachelor’s degree in a related field and significant professional/personal practice experience

Experience:

  • Active and established animation-relevant artists who have an accomplished portfolio or reel, substantial experience, with prior teaching experience preferred

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Lead and manage the development of the syllabus and weekly class lectures, demonstrations, materials, and activities, and to be open to collaboration with colleagues and the program director on all as needed
  • Utilize the University’s learning management system, Canvas, for student communications, attendance and grading, including posting clearly designed assignment descriptions and deadlines
  • Teach the fifteen weekly class meetings per semester in-person
  • Center the stated class learning goals as the directive in all activities and instruction
  • Provide students regular, class wide and individual critique and guidance
  • Utilize available technology to create a more inclusive and flexible classroom
  • Be available outside of class for timely communication with students and colleagues, and provide office hours in person or remotely by appointment
