Profile
Statement:
My paintings are largely about perception, the process of observation and subjective interpretation. A sense of a particular place, tangible, atmospheric and the incorporeal are elements that stimulate and incite me to make my paintings. But they are also about the sensual process of painting itself; the physical quality of the paint, the multiple layers of pigment and glazes that when viewed up close can reveal insights into the decision making process. I have been influenced by many other artists and cultures : Old and Modern Masters, Teachers, Colleagues, Mayan art and architecture. A contrast between control and spontaneity, structure and impetuousness, coexist simultaneously in almost all my work because of so many influences.
The subject, style and content of my work have undergone various changes and transformations throughout my career. Travels through Central America and my interest in the ancient Maya inspired a series of works with a narrative flavor. Other influences in my life have caused change even further. Over the years my work has transformed from fairly direct observational drawing and painting into abstractions that are inspired by my travels and interests in ancient archeological sites. Currently I am working on a series of new paintings that have been inspired by a recent journey through China.
