Artist Statement
Fast, cheap and out of control, photography has been taking over the culture—high and low—since its introduction in 1839. Trained as a photographer, I began thinking about the medium by looking at what was going on around me: in classrooms, galleries, newspapers, books. But as a writer interested in history and culture, I have found myself, more and more, focusing beyond the immediate questions of the contemporary photo scene (who’s doing what) to the historical antecedents (where did it come from) and larger cultural significance (why should we care).
