Multi-instrumentalist/singer/composer Ryan Kuhns received his B.M. in three years from the University of the Arts in 2010 and his M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music in 2012, where he studied privately with world-renowned bassist Jay Anderson.
A regular performer on the New York City/Philadelphia music scene has afforded him the opportunity to perform with many jazz greats such as David Liebman, Greg Osby, Joel Frahm, Joe Locke, John Blake Jr., Tim Warfield, Phil Markowitz, Joe Magnarelli, John Fedchock, Marcus Belgrave, Futureman, John Swana and Gregg Field. In addition he is an alumnus of both the Norman David Eleventet and the Lars Halle Big Band and recorded a live performance for PhillyCAM TV with the Ross Bellenoit Quartet.
Ryan’s discography includes his highly praised debut album "Circle: Live at Manhattan School of Music" (2014), "Like No One Else" by the UArts School of Music Graduate Ensemble (2015) which he coached and played bass in, "Driving North" by Ross Bellenoit (2015) and "The University of the Arts Big Band" CD (2010) which was given a glowing review by allaboutjazz.com.
Ryan’s interest in other styles of music has given him such wide-ranging experiences as performing at Carnegie Hall as principal bassist with the National Festival Orchestra under the baton of Benjamin Zander; recording an avant-garde soundtrack for a short film entitled "Theodore of the Absurd" by Brad Glanden; performing with harpist/singer-songwriter Gillian Grassie on NBC’s The 10! Show and multiple times on WXPN; opening up for Charlie Daniels, Josh Turner, Joe Nichols, David Nail, Uncle Kracker, Jamie Lynn Spears, Jerrod Niemann, Chris Cagle, Josh Thompson etc. with country artist Liv Devine, as well as, recording singles for the radio and filming a music video; playing in a contemporary classical chamber group called the NakedEye Ensemble; playing in a duo group with fellow bassist and the head of UArt’s School of Music—Micah Jones; in numerous pit orchestras; and in praise and worship/gospel bands.
As an educator Ryan has been on the bass faculty at the University of the Arts since 2012 and has recorded many instructional videos with Tony Miceli and Joe Magnarelli. In addition Ryan co-taught a jazz improvisation lecture series at the Curtis Institute of Music; taught the basics of jazz in NYC public schools as an ambassador for Manhattan School of Music; and has taught private lessons and clinics for years.
