John Welte teaches the Single Reed Instruments Class at The University of the Arts. In May of 1978, he received Bachelor’s Degrees in Clarinet and in Music Education from the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, (now UArts).

He retired in June of 2011 after a 33 year career teaching music in a Public School District in New Jersey. For 23 years, he taught general music classes, instrumental lessons, chorus, and band at the Elementary School. For the last 10 years, he was the band director at the Middle School.

A woodwind player in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, he was a member of the house orchestra in the Superstar Theater at Resorts International Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City for more than 20 years. Presently, he is a member of the orchestra at the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia.

Also a composer/arranger, he has written chorus, concert band, and jazz band arrangements on the Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School levels. For UArts, he has recently written for the Transfusion Ensemble, and various woodwind and saxophone ensembles. Two of his own compositions have been published in the Saxophone Journal magazine.
