Profile
Charles Browning teaches drawing in the Foundation and Fine Arts departments at the University of the Arts. He also teaches at Bucks County Community College (Pa.) and does private art sessions with brain-injured clients at Success Rehabilitation in Quakertown, Pa. He has previously taught at New York University and Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.
Charles received his BFA in Drawing and Illustration in 1987 from the California College of the Arts, and an MFA in Studio Art from New York University in 2004.
He lives in Bucks County with goats, chickens, two cats and one wife. Working in oils and referencing art-historical styles, he makes paintings that puncture the propaganda of American frontier mythology and comment on race, gender and power in American history.
Recent group shows include "Giving Face," Nicholas Robinson Gallery, N.Y., and "Dark Americana," Baer Ridgeway Gallery, San Francisco. During the summer of 2009, he showed with Morgan Lehman Gallery in their Lakeville, Conn., space and was at the Rochefort-En-Terre artist residency in France.
Charles is represented by Schroeder Romero & Shredder Gallery, N.Y. His next solo show with the gallery will be in 2011.
