Greenfield Library collections and facilities:
The Albert M. Greenfield Library, on the first floor and lower level of Anderson Hall, contains one of the finer art and design school libraries in the country, dating back to 1876 when the College of Art and Design was founded as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. It serves as the University's general library, containing materials in many formats related to art and design, dance, theater, media arts, liberal arts, and other general subjects. Specialized collections in Greenfield include the University Archives, the Picture File, Special Collections, Book Arts, and a textile collection.

The Greenfield Library has one color copier on the first floor and a black-and-white copier on the lower level. The copiers accept change, $1 and $5 bills, and copy cards. Copy cards may be purchased from the card vending machines near the security guards' stations in Anderson Hall and in Terra. Copy cards are a good bargain and can be added to indefinitely. Be sure to write your name or phone number on your copy card so we can call you if you forget it.

A change machine is located on the mezzanine of Anderson Hall. Telephones and restrooms are in the first-floor hallway outside the library.

Three media viewing stations are available in Greenfield: two for videos, and one for DVDs and videos.

The Greenfield Library is a wireless "hot spot"! Use your computer's wireless connection, or check out a network cable from the circulation desk with your UArts ID and plug your laptop into the campus network in Greenfield.

The librarians have compiled lists of the libraries' subscription databases, subject guides, links to other Philadelphia area libraries, and more within the University Libraries Web pages.

The University of the Arts Music Library is a specialized library supporting academic programs in music performance and education, musical theater, and dance as well as other related interests. Originating from the teaching collections of the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music (founded 1877), the Philadelphia Musical Academy (1870), and the Philadelphia Dance Academy (1947), the Music Library's holdings are strong in performance and study score editions, scores of mid-twentieth-century schools of of composition, jazz transcription anthologies, and songs of the American theater. In addition to canonical and theoretical subjects central to the Western tradition, the collection continues to be developed in interdisciplinary studies, jazz and blues, music folklore, the psychology of music, and music business. Holdings include approximately 20,000 scores, 15,000 books, 10,000 LP discs, and 5,000 CDs.

Overlooking Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, the Music Library occupies space in the historic Shubert Theatre building (renamed the Merriam Theater in 1991), adjacent to the Academy of Music. The facility has two main parts, a large Reading Room with study space surrounded by Reference materials on one side, adjacent to the circulating collections, with individual listening carrels conveniently located opposite. Included, too, are a Music Education Resources center, separate rooms with audiovisual monitors, a keyboard workstation, and a photocopier.

For a fuller description of the Music Library, see About the Music Library. For annotated Music Reference Bibliographies, and the Music Library's annual publication, Reading Room Notes, see the Music Reference Sources pages maintained by the Music Librarian.

Approximately 175,000 slides are available in the Visual Resources room, with new slides being added constantly. The Visual Resources Collections' primary purpose is to serve as a teaching collection, therefore slides are added in response to faculty requests and are used primarily by faculty. Light tables and Caramates are available for the viewing and selection of slides. Slides placed on reserve by faculty for students may be viewed in the Visual Resources room when it is open; reserve slides go downstairs to the Greenfield Library circulation desk on evenings and weekends after the Visual Resources room closes. Some slide reserves are also available electronically. Look for the IMAGES ON RESERVE link on the Visual Resources Collections page.

The Picture File consists of thousands of mounted pictures available for check-out and are in filing cabinets on the lower level of the Greenfield Library. The pictures are broken down into the categories of Subjects, Artists' Works, Geography, People, Maps, and Museums and Galleries. The Picture File is a popular and heavily-used resource.
